Best beaver lure out there ? - 07/11/18 07:14 AM

Are all beaver lures created equal or does one shine above the rest ? I hear "Dobbin's back breaker " and "sweet water flat tail" come up a lot here. Any opinions ? -Thanks

Lots of factors that come into play. Location is one of them. Like many critters, what works in the south, may not work in the north. (Dam a dam is a great southern beaver lure...not so much up here).

The amount of competition (of trappers AND beaver populations) can also play a big role in what lure should be used. There are areas where I seldom, if ever, use Castor for this reason.

A trapper has to test (AND COMPARE) lures on their line to get a real consensus. Too many guys use one or two lures, catch a few beaver and think they have the best lure out there. Not usually the case. Always test your best lure against something new...or other bests.

That said, I've tested a fair amount of beaver lure. Backbreaker is my best producing "castor based" lure in my area. Works real well down a dirthole I've found as well.

You won't go wrong with Backbreaker. Catch beavers, cats, foxes etc etc with it. I even know a guy that is one of the crazed fish-for-money carp fisherman and he mixes it in his carp bait and swears by it, but those guys will try anything

Thanks for that tip, Calvin. I've heard that quite a few times. I'm going to try it this year.

Backbreaker, Kaatz Beaver lure, and Beaver Buffet. Any which one could be #1 but the last works all year.

ooooh,Wilson's green

Re: Best beaver lure out there ? - 07/11/18 02:46 PM

I have no doubt that Wilson's green is a fine lure in certain places but I did not catch the first beaver with that lure in my area. It simply did not work HERE.

Marsyada's 501 has never let me down. I alternate with Weiser's Beaver gland. His Damage Stopper in the fall. as well as my own concoction. The really tough ones I use straight sac oil. I am sure Back breaker is solid too.

I have two of my own formulations that work good.I buy more lure nowadays with the price of castor,it makes more sense to buy lure.
Bob Wilsons I have used for years,it is a great lure right thru from spring summer and fall.
I tried Dobbins Backbreaker a couple years ago,it works just as good as the Bob Wilsons here.

Keep you castor in a white grocery bag. Sell the castor and use the bag for lure. works great.

We've been having good success on Beaver Plus doing ADC work. We also use Backbreaker and straight castor too.

I don't think there's a single "best lure". I like backbreaker, but I prefer woodchipper alot more. Ogorman makes some good beaver lure, and I really like poplar bud oil.

What is your reason for liking Woodchipper more?

Re: Best beaver lure out there ? - 07/15/18 12:30 AM

I'm not a big numbers beaver trapper, I've really only been chasing them for 2ish years now, but in my area so far I just can't seem to get a great response off of castor. I've used back breaker (which has by far been the most effective castor based lure I've used), Marsyada's beaver castor, and 3 or 4 other castor based lures and almost every time regardless of the season I'll catch beaver off woodchipper over castor.

3 or 4 colonies could just be a coincidence, but it's been going on long enough it's starting to turn into a pattern. Woodchipper is just flat out more effective for me.

You've been chasing them for 2 years. I've been chasing them 9 months a year for 27 years. Believe it or not, Woodchipper is my favorite also.

Is woodchipper a food based lure?

I have much better success with Bob Wilson's green in summer for nuisance. Castor gets a bit of action, but Bob Wilson's more. In fall, no difference.

If I had only one, I would pick Bob Wilson's.

I'd like to try some wood chipper though

Yes, it is food based. When it gets warm down here, it's the only lure I use. It works all year long. Castor based lures tend not to be as effective for me down here in the heat of summer.

Yes, castor doesn't work well when it gets hot here either it seems. I might order some!

The more I use Woodchipper, the better I like it. Works great all year and is attractive to adult females as well. It's become my favorite.

Re: Best beaver lure out there ? - 07/24/18 01:22 AM

Aix, I've just been using basic feed sets mostly. Both with foot holds, snares and conibears. Some halfway peeled sticks and a glob of woodchipper and good to go. Ill occasionally toss and apple or some corn or something in the pile if it's convenient and there aren't too many geese or ducks around.

I don't see why woodchipper wouldn't work on torpedoes either. Might be worth a try

Sweetwater Flattail and some of John Graham's lures work for me, fall and spring. I'm sure you cant go wrong with Weiser's.

Re: Best beaver lure out there ? - 07/29/18 12:47 AM

Backbreaker is my go to lure. You will also need a "change up" lure. A change up lure is used when a beaver has a bad experience at a set and has become shy of the Backbreaker. I like to use Jeff Dunlaps "Big Pile" as a change up lure. Although many others are just as effective.

Once again, I’d like to hear what type of sets they use with wood chipper, as well as how they’re applying and presenting the lure.

Thanks
I usually use it with bait, usually popple. But I also use it sometimes just to get them to swim down a channel through a 330, or where ever I want to attract them. It isn't really site specific. I especially like to use it at ADC sites where beaver have been trapped previously and where I think they could possibly be castor shy.
