Drags for bobcat

I'm curious how you guys attach a trap to a drag for Bobcats, I'm going to run sabertooth drags and 10 feet of chain. I'm ok with the drag being permanently attached to the chain but would like my trap to be removable yet ridgid. Would a quick link work or should I hook 2 j hooks together on 2 swivels to attach it to the chain. Any photos would be greatly appreciated.

I use quick links and j hook swivels. With my drags setups I have at least 3 swivels in the first 3 or 4 feet of chain. Either way works for me, and what luvacanids said is true, be prepaired to look up if you have trees in your area.

I wouldn’t drag a bobcat unless it was a 5’ piece of hardwood. Your gunna be doing a lot of looking in the trees.

I use rivets(j hooks) on mine with about 3 crunch proof swivels. I thought I saw that you were down by Montpelier, so if you're in the sage and mountain mahogany a sabertooth should be fine. I also use about 10' of chain.

Old newbie , I am in montpelier, I'm planning on trapping wyoming this fall and I know of a couple sets where traditional anchors just wont work so I need to use a couple drags. But there are a few cedar trees in the area I'm going so I'll look out for the cats in trees if I get any, thanks for the information on the drags.

Sabertooths are excellent drags and cats shouldn't go very far on a drag like that.I worry more about mountain lions climbing.You should have good drag trails to work with.I also use quick links-1/4",due to the presence of lions.I prefer a heavy clog or chaining around a tree,when I can't stake.

I been using some of those sabortooth drags on 10-12ft of chain the drag never even moves. Sometimes a foot or 2 lol.

Not if he uses 5-6' of chain like me...AND pre-hooks to saplings or logs...then they are no more than head high and easy dispatch.

They also leave their scent in the local area, attracting others.

Thayne . . . you're over thinking it a bit. Just go catch some cats. I think in 25 years I've had one climb a Joshua tree and a couple climb a juniper tree. Other than that, they want to hide under something rather than climb up in it.

Lazarus that's a fault of mine that I always have when going after any new animal I always way over think it. How do you guys bed your exposed cat traps and keep them working in the snow? Any tips on that would be greatly appreciated

I don't do anything when I start the season but I watch the weather reports. When we get that first snow, I brush all the snow off of the trap set and then sprinkle with salt. I try to put sets on the south side of trees and ledges where the snow burns off quickest. Usually that's where the cats want to travel anyway -- where the snow isn't.

I 2nd the your going to be looking in the trees. I personally stake my cat sets. I always worry about having to go get a chain saw to retrieve a cat. Just me maybe.

Prefer clogs for cats as they don't climb as much as with a drag. Usually use a dry pole seven or eight foot long with a relatively short chain of two or three foot. That doesn't keep them out of coyote sets on drags though. On regular drags, for coyotes, a chain of eight to ten foot has been adequate.

I'm only gona run 2 maybe 3 drag sets.i have cables and cable steals for the other sets I'll make .The reason for me asking is I've never used drags for anything and I wanted to be prepared with everything I may need so I dont have to order in the middle of the season. Thanks everyone for the tips.
