Coyote Trap - 12/15/18 10:58 PM

Would an MB550 be large enough for coyotes, or would the 650 better fit the bill?
Looking to replace some older traps next year.
Using #3 Bridgers, Victors and older Herters traps at present.

In my opinion the 650 Is over kill.

My 550’s work just fine. But that’s as large as I can go legally.

The Bridger #2 or #3 dogless is a good alternative and frankly, the lower cost allows you to buy more traps. I have never had a problem with them even when they have had to hold an inadvertly caught wolf. I guess it depends on what label you need to see on the back of your jeans.

The 550’s are a perfect all around trap.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/16/18 12:36 AM

I'm with the largest legal crowd.I ran 650's for a while and switched to the no bs k9 extremes.I could not be happier, they are built better than any trap I have seen.Everyone raves about the Jake traps but the extremes are just as good. They have a huge kill area, the pan sets below the jaws when set and bed wonderfully. They are twice the trap of the 650 and the 550 (I own both). If you are a small dirt hole guy and want small traps go with the extreme jr. I use a 3" hole that gets bigger after remakes and for blind trail sets and flat sets the K9 extreme gets the job done better than anything I've found.

Man those 650s are known for a bad dead spot on the pan, I had some and was always jacking with them trying to get the tension to stay right. If you are after a dogless trap as stated above the k9 extremes are really nice, as well as the jakes. I have both and they work really good for me. I also have some k9 juniors and really like them too. If you get some of them 4 coiled though you will want to use some wax on the pan catch to get the tension lower. The 4 coiled ones I had were probably 5 lbs or a little higher on a floppy pan. I have some 2 coiled ones now and the coils are on the loose jaw side and they set right around 3 lbs on a floppy pan. I have not tried any of the dogless bridgers, but they look to be a well designed trap at a really good price. If I changed one thing on them I would make the pan catch below the top of the jaw like the extremes, and the jakes, just personal preference I sure the work really well the way they are set up.

For a 24 hr. Check any of them will do alright.

Little adjustment on nut holding pan to increase pan tension and I have had nothing but high pad catches. I am a financial conservative (cheap) and have no need for what is most popular

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/16/18 02:34 AM

As stated above maintaining pan tension on the 650's is an exercise in futility.I have adjusted pan tension, added a washer to the dog/jaw holder to take out end play and they can be 4 lbs today and 2 up to 10 lbs tomorrow. I am as big a financial conservative as there is but I am positive my son will be setting and using the K9 extremes 25 years from now or longer
If I prorated that out the Extremes are very financially consciousness.

I bought a dozen 650 this year and set them on the coyote and bobcat line and can’t say enough good about them some of them have had a couple coyotes in them with no broken or damaged part and also love the low profile

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/16/18 12:21 PM

I've caught a dozen or so yotes on my MB450s so I'd say the 550s would be perfect. Thinking of purchasing a 1/2 doz. 550s or Extreme (Jr?) for next year though to try something a little bigger for yotes & cats.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/16/18 12:28 PM

I use mostly 550s and have caught everything from possum to bobcat in them and every in between. I like the size and how easy they bed. I use only 2 coil also. They are great traps. Never had to straighten a trap out after a catch since I switched.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/16/18 01:38 PM

I’ve caught a slug of coyotes in the 550. You get a bent dog on them every once in a while but they are a strong little trap. I prefer a dog-less #3 trap anymore.

I’ve got some 650’s also but don’t use them much. I should sell them.

If a coyote steps In a #2 duke square jaw he's yours.

HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD RIGHT HERE!! Plus they come right out of the box dipped and ready to go and that coating will last a couple of years. Financially conservative, yeah what ever, I'm always out of money and if I made more I'd still be out of money, hahaha. Tell ya what, take the cost of a dozen mb 650s, add the cost of your preferred treatment and your time/labor to treat them and I'll bet they come out to close to the same price as the k9 extremes, but you still might have to tinker with the pan tension, hehehe

They are actually very good due to the lock up and physical weight they allow very little to no foot movement. I am convinced that foot movement causes the most damage

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/17/18 04:22 PM

Love the K-9 extremes I have. I use the 4 coil and do have to wax them but high foot catch on mine this fall. They were not going anywhere.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/18/18 01:32 AM

5 dozen 4 coil mb550s on my coyote lines. There a tough trap. Held anything that's been thrown there way this year. Including 2 mountain lions and a bear. Toe catches on all three and no harm done. Can't say enough good things about these traps performing.

X2. Cast jaws that are hooked upon the tips so they CAN NOT be pulled out. Built in night latch is really nice and they lay FLAT right out of the box. Big pan and enough jaw spread to take any coyote foot. I use the 2 coil model but there is a 4 coil model available. If you like to alter your traps, the trap pins are plenty long enough to add 2 coils to the 2 coil models yourself. There are some other excellent traps out there but IMO none are any better than the MB550.

I like the bigger traps. 6" jaw spreads for me.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/18/18 10:42 AM

i also run alot 550's, and a lot of bridger dogless #2's. both are good traps. i will say with the dogless twos that the amount of time needed to adjust them was excessive and i said to (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) with it and kick it old school on them, ignoring the "night latch". also, i would advise laminating the jaws on the bridgers. little more foot damage than what i care to see. 550's require ZERO adjustments EVER.

The 550 is a tank ,,, low maintenance worth the $$ spent . This is my choice for K9 s

The 550s are awesome, but I really love the 650s. I have some extremes and jr.s, and they are really nice traps, but they are super heavy. I think I like the 650s better.

None really, just wanting to replace some older traps and hand them down to a nephew to get him started.

My friend uses 2 coil 550's they do just fine for coyote and anything else. I believe its one of the few traps thats ready to go right out of the box other than boil and wax. I traded 3 of my bridger2 dogless for 3 550's and I like them they bed really nice. I run mostly Num 2 dogless bridger and some num 2 modified round jaw dukes.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/25/18 02:00 PM

I'm with the bigger is better crowd. I run #3 bridgers and jakes.... I put PIT pans on the bridgers...its a darn nice operation. I've got 2 650's... very nice piece, but my fingers don't work good enough when its cold to get them set. I suppose with a set of the one hand setters, they would be good.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/25/18 02:40 PM

The MB 550 is an all-around good trap. The MB 550 can and will hold a coyote; it is also significantly easier to set than an MB 650. However, the MB 650 is a better coyote and bobcat trap. If you do a mixed line such as fox, coyote, bobcat, and coon you may be better off with the MB 550s. If you are strictly taking coyote then go for the 650.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/26/18 03:39 AM

Im a big fan of the Extreme Jr. traps, reach for those the majority of the time. I do run Bridger #2 dogless and some MB550's as well, but if I had to pick just one, it would be the Extreme Jr., 2 coil.

Re: Coyote Trap - 12/27/18 09:40 PM

I like the extreme jrs. I have around 30 of them. I got rid of all my 650’s. I have a bunch of 550’s I never intended to own since I like dogless traps. I mainly own them because I invariably get Cabelas gift cards from someone for Christmas. I end up buying a 550 or two and throw them in the pile. Over the years I have come to realize that they’re a reliable tough coyote trap. I‘ll never get rid of them.

MB550 is a great trap, quality all the way! The only short coming is me, the OneHandSetters resolves that problem very nicely...

Re: Coyote Trap - 01/07/19 02:29 AM

I've tried both and I prefer the 550's. Would like to try out a K-9 Extreme someday but the 550's are great traps.

Re: Coyote Trap - 01/07/19 04:05 PM

I've got and use some of all of them. They'll all catch and hold a coyote.

That stated, my favorite trap is the K9 extreme! Hands down. Easy to set, easy to bed, low if any maintenance and I know my grandson will be using them long after I'm gone! Best trap on the market in my opinion!

Re: Coyote Trap - 01/09/19 03:48 AM

been running 450s 550s 650s bridger3 dogless and some sudden valley 4s the 450s the dogs will bend but easily fixed the 650s pan tension can vary the bridger3dogless can be hard on feet sudden valley 4s havent caught yet and the 550s are catching i did bend the dogs on them to give them 2.5 to 3 lbs of pan tension and they work much better on a mixed line they are a solid trap had one run over by a tractor little bit of work and its back on the line and working perfect

Re: Coyote Trap - 01/16/19 03:48 PM

The vast majority of my traps are full mod Bridger #3 Dogless...but I have about 18 2-coiled 550s. They are both nice traps and I like them equally depending on the set. The spring pins on the bridgers though are pretty much crap. But I have a mod for that. But I am currently trapping a place with a friend and he is running the KO-K9 Jrs with IL/OL and 2 coils. I cant say enough good things about them so far. We trap live market and they have really been kind on the feet and although we have had a couple of them snapped we haven't had any pull outs.
