First snare

How did I do? Is anything backwards or wrong or anything? First time actually making one.

Looks good, could get that button end a little closer to the lock, a pair of needle nose pliers gets a real nice tight bend. Did you load it?

Alum. end stops on 1x19 do NOT hold well.
I stoped useing them years ago.
The bend at the lock. I like it rounded.Not a sharp bend.
I also LOAD all my snares.

I use a different type support collar but would say that one is on backwards ? Ive never had a problem with aluminum end stops on that size cable , but maybe some folks are not leaving any tag end outside of it .

I’ll post some pictures of my snares using sure locks within the next day or two (if not tonight).


I use a sure lock size larger than the cable. The way the lock is designed a larger size still locks up very well. By using a size larger, it will slide down the cable more easily = faster snare.


For the end stop, I bend it back to make a 90 degree bend. This is the only lock I do this with but I haven’t found a better bend for a sure lock than 90 degree back bend. Most everything else I make a reverse bend type.


Good job on the universal support collar. That’s the only type I buy and use anymore!

It would likely work as is. IMO though, you'll be a lot happier with a few minor improvements.
1. double crimp the stops and triple crimp the ferrules. To aid in holding.
2. Make your bend at the end a tiny circle and load the cable as Newt mentioned. To make your snares fire shut smooth and fast. Like so...



3. Get rid of that style support collar and use one designed to fit your size cable and your preferred snare wire size, Those hold only moderately on and cable and great on none.

What Newt said about the aluminum ferrules. The 1x19 is really slick so you might think about using two of them instead of just one. Small animals might be fine and cats, but a coyote has no problem popping the singles off if not choked down quickly. Ask me, I know.

If hammering your ferrules on 1X19 cable I also cross punch them with a standard screwdriver for extra security and have never had a problem with coyotes popping them off.

I never use an end stop on snares without killsprings.Make a loop,much stronger and you don't have to screw around bending the wire.The loop will make the snare close perfect every time.
I slightly load 1x19.

I only use choke springs, I think ends need to be flattened more
Is there a swivel in middle of your snare?

The snare looks correct. I use 1 x19 cable also but I use a hammer to smash down the aluminum ends. I have never had problems doing it that way.

After a second look yes it is .. I cant figure how all these guys are having trouble with end stops coming off .. I'm not as big a number guy as many of you , but 300 coyotes in last 4 years have never popped one off, maybe it is because of the kill spring . I dont have a press , I use a hammer and anvil . Ive had coyotes open the Senneker 265# BADs and the odd chew but thats it .

This is a hog snare I made with 7/64” 1x19 and a sure lock. I make my 1/16” and 5/64” with the same bend and load.


This straight back 90 degree bend, at least with a load, works very well with sure locks. It’s the only bend I use with sure locks, and it fires/closes very quickly.


Doesn’t mean it’s the only way, but it works very well for me....

I would NEVER trust a end stop on 1x19 cable.Quit useing them years ago.

Sure locks are the only locks I use that bend, and it’s the only bend I make with that lock. I just really like that bend with sure locks, because they fire lickety-split, close tight, and don’t slip. Caught a handful of hogs by the snout with them like this while I was still hog snaring, even though I’ll admit that I’m not sure how or why that happens.


As for the end stop, you got me there! Made up a half dozen small hog/large coyote loop snares a while back, and I used end stops for some reason. Normally I only use annealed 1/4” nuts for 7/64” snares, threaded mini end stops for almost everything smaller.


Works for me, and if no one else does it the way I do, it won’t make a bit of difference to me. It’s all just visitin’ anyway
