Would green leaves have a higher tannin content than dry leaves?

I've never really tried leaves on traps however I've used sagebrush leaves along with juniper leaves and berries on my snares with success I put them into a old cook pot early one spring and added well water from time to time there was some pin holes in the bottom of the pot the snares turned colors and worked very well for me since I was snaring predators out in the sagebrush and juniper hills, pine could work too quite possibly.

Maybe I should do a test on my new traps. I used dried oak leaves for trap dye last fall and it worked great. I might grab some while they're still green and see how they compare.

Are you boiling them with the leaves?

Anything high in tannins will blacken your traps.
I use the twigs, leaves and catkins from tag alder, and it produces a nice deep blue black finish on the traps.I lay the traps on a bed of the branches in 1\2 a 45 gal drum, then fill with water and cover the traps with more leafy chopped branches, then fill with water.I bring to a good boil, then let the traps set there to cool til next morning when I bring to a boil again and then immediately wax when the traps are hot.Traps like 120's set in trees only need to be done every 3rd or 4th year.
Alder is a building material here for beaver, and not a feed tree, unless starving,so it leaves the beaver traps with a nice natural smell.

We use walnuts. If you break em open and put them in there that works fine.
