19-20 Nevada Trapping Journal Back to Back Cats - 11/08/19 01:52 AM

I figure I might as well start another journal thread. I haven’t put out any cat sets yet but did put out a small coyote line behind the house. We were able to catch a little bit of fur. We have now pulled those traps and will set a little further out and see what else we can catch.

I sure do miss trapping in Nevada. I grew up in Lovelock. I used to love cage trapping those kit fox! The wife and I are planning on moving back next year. I miss the mountains and junipers and sagebrush. Not to mention the miles upon endless miles of public land. Can’t find that around here.

Cat traps have been out for a week. Caught this big Tom this morning in a Bridger 1.65 with one of Mike Kelly’s expanded pans using an exposed walkthrough set. Don’t need a big trap for a big cat. And don’t need to put anything on the trap when you got a big pan. These cats aren’t afraid to pack their paw in a smaller trap.

Re: My 2019-2020 Nevada Trapping Journal - 11/30/19 07:00 PM

The fox have been coming in like normal, a few plugging my cat sets most checks. After catching the first cat I decided to set this area a lot harder then I planned. I originally set is with a dozen traps just to help pass the time before I got to wear I scouted all off season. So once I got a cat, my wife was more then happy to let me spend more time haha. I moved further up the mountain then the storm of the century hit. I knew most of my sets would be buried so I got out while it was snowing to find weather proof areas. I was able to get out a half dozen sets in good spots that would get snowed on like this......
[Linked Image]

I’m glad I did that before checking traps because within a couple hours, there was around 6” of snow on the ground and it was still coming. I uncovered most my sets knowing full well they would be buried again before the storm let off. I’m glad I got the weather proof ones in so I have a little hope for the next check haha. We normally don’t have to deal with this where I’m trapping. Ended the night with a handful of fox and a big Tom with an awesome belly!!!!

Re: My 2019-2020 Nevada Trapping Journal - 12/09/19 03:55 PM

Awesome week of cat trapping last week. My midweek night check was extremely slow with only a fox until I got to the last set. It’s an exposed walkthrough set next to a rim rock ledge.
[Linked Image]

Night checks are always slow because I can’t make any new sets or move traps around. My weekend checks don’t seem as slow because if I don’t catch anything, I have lots motivation to explore up new roads and canyons I haven’t been before to look for new locations. That’s how Saturday was going as I was running out of sets to check when I caught this big, wide bellied Tom!

Haha. I was happy that my new iPhone 11 allows me to resize photos when I attach them to things which is perfect since you can only post 2GB pics on this forum. Well sometimes it has a tough time resizing the pics and puts weird lines on it haha. But yes I do use a wyldwings replica. Might have to switch to the real deal because the swivels on the ones I made break in high wind.

Finlly put together the videos I took the last 5 weeks. Wasn't planning on making videos till the second half of the season, but we got lucky and starting catching haha. Pulling traps tomorrow then heading to northern nevada for chirstmas. Ill try to trap some coyotes and muskrats on the farm, then heading back to southern nevada to trap the area we scouted all off season. I'll try to keep my promise of weekly videos the second half of the season. Hope you enjoy the vidoe!

Re: My 2019-2020 Nevada Trapping Journal - 12/24/19 07:37 AM

So I’m a little behind in my journal. Since I was heading to northern Nevada to visit my family for Christmas, I decided it was a good time to pull my traps then set the area I scouted all summer after I get back home. I am a first generation hunter and trapper and have always wanted to bring family along and my brother finally agreed to come help me pull. It was a very slow night until we were almost done when we find this pretty girl waiting for us.
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

Now I’m up in Fallon Nevada and brought along some coyote traps and some muskrat traps. Figure I might as well go for some nice coyotes than our Vegas song dogs. I forgot how frustrating coyote trapping can be. This one barely missed the pan.
[Linked Image]

We still have a few more days to hopefully connect with one in a trap, and maybe call in a couple as well. As for the muskrats, no shortage of them. Just finished day two and now have 6 rats with only 8 traps out. My son really likes this trapping trip. Drive around on his grandpas ATV or dirt bike and check traps without hiking up washes or up to rim rocks.

Between the trapping and duck hunting, we are having an awesome start to our Christmas break!

Re: My 2019-2020 Nevada Trapping Journal - 01/07/20 04:00 AM

Here’s the cat with a belly shot and the remake. Once again, no need to burry the trap especially when you are using Mike Kelly’s expanded trap pans. First season I’ve ran out of traps. Just got more expanded pans for the traps that will be here on Wednesday! Going to match them up with 8’ of #2 chain and JC Conner’s 2lbs drags.
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

This last check we hammered the K9s. 3 kit fox, and grey fox, and a coyote.
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]

I’ve been watch Tom Miranda’s videos on YouTube and decided to try out one of the remakes he does on his video. It was a female who was clearly in heat with tons of coyote tracks around the catch circle. Hopefully this t-bone walkthrough type remake works!

Here's the video from my last update.

Re: My 2019-2020 Nevada Trapping Journal - 01/15/20 05:37 PM

So I’m kind of running two lines right now. They are about 30 miles from each other. The move heavily set area is where I caught the cat on New Year’s Day. I haven’t found new cat sign but one fresh turd at a toilet, and have had fox plugging traps every check. The smaller area has only given me a couple grey fox, but last check I found a few different fresh turds so I set a few more out and decided I’m going to pull the heavily set area and expand this smaller line. Wasn’t sure if I made the right decision till I checked and pulled last night. The smaller area connect on a beautiful Tom while the larger area gave me the middle finger. Lots of hiking and pulling with zero fur to show.

This season I’ve been on my own and have the freedom to do what I want with my lines. So as soon as an area slows down, I start moving traps. It might just be moving further back or trying new canyons in the same area, or it could be packing up and moving to another mountain range. I trap for fun, and it’s not fun checking the same empty sets every check. Haha I rather check empty sets in a new spot. Keeps your hopes high, and keeps you motivated. With only 6 weeks left in the season. I’ll most likely stay in this new area, and if things slow down, I’ll just move sets around in the area.

A real cat trapper knows how to get the animal to pose.
[Linked Image]

Caught in an exposed MB550 with a Wild River trap pan and cabled to a bush. I’m not exactly sure what lures I used on this set, but I have a gland lure on one side, curiosity lure on the other, and a call lure up high. A strip of tyvek of a swivel hanging above the set for the visual. On the remake I didn’t add any more lure. Just piled up urine drenched dirt and sticks on each side of the set. More than enough calling power there haha. I refresh it will some new smells on the next check. I wish all my cats had this belly.

Re: My 2019-2020 Nevada Trapping Journal - 02/03/20 06:05 PM

I’ve been focusing on my videos and haven’t done a journal update in awhile. So I got my traps all moved to a new area. The grey fox have been hitting very consistently, but the cat trapping died down a lot. I found a big toilet further down the range I caught that last cat in, but nothing in the other range I moved too except a few white turds. I have no where else to go so I decided to set the catty areas anyways and just enjoy the last month and a half of the season. I’ve already had the most consistent trapping season ever, and have been having a ton of fun with my son.

Even with zero cat sign, I knew something would have to move through the area while looking for love. That hunch paid off on Saturday. The biggest shocker was the second stop of the morning (fox at the first stop) when I went to check my coyote dirt hole (bobcat meat as bait and old reliable as a lure) and saw this beautiful Tom in an MB450. It’s actually the second cat I’ve caught in an MB450. One was in a cat set I made when I was out of bigger traps, and now this one.
[Linked Image]

The following spot we caught a badger, and then nothing at the next. We then walked a new wash and found a few turds so we set it. Then off to the signless range. At the first stop we have a fox in the first set, and at the last set had this Tom.
[Linked Image]

We were pumped to have two cats in one check. We head to the next stop. We get to the last set there and have another bobcat! This time a female.
[Linked Image]

Catching here made me feel better about the area. If there’s a female around, the toms should be there sooner or later looking. They all have amazing bellies, but this female was one of those that had white to the toes!
[Linked Image]

Turned out to be our best check of the season!!!! We finally have a cold front coming in (dry, but still a huge temp change) so hopefully it gets cats moving again. There was one happy and tired boy at the end of the day.

This last check wasn't nice. Single digits with the wind chill, and two days before it was 75. I was freezing. But for the most part, i wear a light sweatshirt early in the morning or after dark, and a t-shirt during the day. Worst part is the sun burn haha.

My smallest cat is 34” and my largest is 43”. Biggest cat I’ve caught down here went 48”.

The spot I just moved too has smaller cats. 34”-38”. I’m not sure if it’s a genetic thing or if it got trapped hard last season and new young cats moved in. If so then recruitment must be really high which is always a good sign. And these cats are smaller but they are some of the best bellies I’ve ever caught. All have 5-6” of clear white bellies at the narrowest part and very dark spots.

Re: My 2019-2020 Nevada Trapping Journal - 02/10/20 05:51 PM

I’m on my best cat streak ever! Saturday made for 3 checks in a row with at least one cat, and this time I got 2. I pulled my lower traps, and had nothing at the first two stops. Then the 3rd stop was the money spot. First trap was where i caught the big coyote a couple weeks back. Had a huge badger in it.
[Linked Image]

The next trap is where I found a fresh cat turd and caught a fox and badger. This time I had a nice cat!!! Almost missed it with the hind foot catch. (I’ll explain my theory on how you get a hind foot catch in a walkthrough and why it’s not a good thing in my next YouTube video).
[Linked Image]

On my way to the set with the cat I noticed my other walkthrough set about 50 yards away was destroyed. I had a drag on the trap that I pretangled on a bush but noticed nothing jumping around. Grey fox normally don’t move big blocking like that and I couldn’t see a coyote jumping around so I was pretty confident I had another cat. Well i was wrong haha. The coyote was able to untangle the. Drag but tangled up again about 10’ from the set. It was just around the corner sonI couldn’t see it. I thought they would be rubbed up pretty good, but not yet. They are sienging some, but I’ll take it!
[Linked Image]

I finished the rest of that area and got all those traps pulled. Next was time to reset the traps in a new spot. I didn’t find much sign at first but still set the catty locations. 75% of my catches this season have been in catty spots with no sign. I then head a little deeper and find a wash with a lot of turds. They were older and white, but still sign. I make a set then wash up the wash more and notice cat tracks! So I made a few more sets.
[Linked Image]

When I get back to the truck a man approached me. He’s another fellow Nevada cat trapper. We talked a little about trapping and hunting. I needed to hurry and get my sets out before dark, but i love talking and live hunting and trapping so I don’t mind anytime I can’t talk about hunting and trapping. I went to the next spot to set and had a similar experience. No sign but set the catty spots. Then I found two fresh cat turds. I made sure to set it good and will definitely need to set a few more sets in this spot on Tuesday.

Now it was dark and time to check the second half of my traps. I get to the first spot and as I round a corner in a cliff section I notice my blocking is gone and instantly see this....
[Linked Image]

A nice Tom. I remade the set. The other spots were empty. I did forget to mention I caught another fox in the sets i pulled. So I was able to get the desert big 3 in one day. Grey fox, coyote, and bobcat.
