Best coyote trapping video - 12/26/19 03:28 AM

What is everyone's favorite video to improve your trapping game ? Something beyond the basics and works anywhere.

What about a book with the same criteria?

I'd start with mark junes book and clint locklears book. Their videos are good also

These questions usually turn into a popularity contest. Some answers really good, and some based on the flavor of the month.

Aint that the truth. I would recommend JC Conner's videos and books anytime. He's been there and done that for many years.

I have one from Odon Corr that is really good. He's forgot more than I'll ever know.

Mark June's "Reducing the Numbers" is the absolute #1 on my list! OUTSTANDING!

JC Conner's videos are second to none. The detail is outstanding. I wish he would come out with another. Gary Jepson's is good too.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll definitely try JC Conner's video, if it's anything like his other products it'll be good.

I'll probably try some of the others as time/money allows

If you are into doing you tube, there is plenty out there for free. I take it if your on here you have a computer and / or a smartphone . As far as coyote DVD's or tapes I'm sure what ever one you pick you will learn something from it.

I guess the biggest challenge is being more consistent on catches. I caught about 20 this fall but it seems as if it was about 3-5 days between catches. I'm on location because there are tracks/scat present. I tried some blind trail sets on the edge of the road but it's hard to keep them working because the rain was uncovering or washing sand/silt over them.

I also know I need to be more efficient with time at the set. I occasionally have first or second night catches.

I'm using more walkthrough and flat sets now. Either double/triple punch, bait sticks or tbones. I had zero catch on urine posts with burnt wood where last year it produced several.

Another area I'd like to improve is picking locations where the ground doesn't provide a place to see tracks. I'm in a heavy timber area with lots of pine plantations. Clearcuts are easy. Grassy areas and big hardwoods are tougher.

I’m in the same boat. I mainly set roads and intersections. After trapping this place last year, I know what areas to concentrate on and which areas to not waste time on. Even our roads don’t leave a lot of sign, mainly looking for scat or using trail cams to give you a clue.

Don’t get discouraged. I’ve been doing this for a lot of years. After the weather we had last winter . I was all jacked up and planning on having 30+ the first 7 days I trapped. Ended up with 15 or so and half had mange. Pretty humbling!!!! Don’t get wrapped up in the numbers and zero down on how consistent your sets are. As dad used to say “Be quick but don’t hurry”!

There is a bunch of good dvds out. I always like watching Matt Jones. Coyotes have made me pull out what hair I have left over the yrs.

Re: Best coyote trapping video - 12/28/19 11:42 AM

It is humbling.
I had to quit watching DVDs taken in warmer climates and conditions because it wasnt realistic for our typical december prime coyote taking here. I liked some you tube vids I saw of local guys. Papio creek is just to north of me and his late season techniques and terrain is spot on to where I trap. But I've also just put in the time and learned what works for me too.
Some days I stare at empty sets and wonder if I was way off on location, then couple empty checks later and I have a double.
Got one farm that produced 3 in first week last year. This year exact same locations setting on sign and haven't picked up any there. Not even a fired trap or print in a dirt pattern. It's a cool location too, maowed hay field right next to a very wooly overgrown cedar thicket in middle of section you can only walk into it. Nothing and I have 5 sets spread out back there. But on very Next farm over, I got three this year and last year it was all blanks for a whole month of checks. Last year I threw 8 out of first 10 away due to mange. This year knock on wood have no mange showing up yet.
also had a couple coyotes shot and stolen from sets last week. Way back in middle of section, i set back in there on purpose to avoid the idiots but this year they drove up a steep ditch to get in and it was truck tracks around all the draws and edges, and of course right up to each set and didnt even try to hide the crime scenes. At least they left the traps this time. But with higher coyote prices the loss hurt.
When prices are up on coyotes it's a tough game around here. Everyone and their best friends are out driving and hunting them. Numbers go down fast and the whole world becomes these guys playground whether they have permission or not.
Last year all of december was basically mud here. Rained a ton early in month then freeze thaw every day and tough dirt trapping conditions. The yocals couldn't drive everywhere and I hauled a lot of waxed dirt into sections but had one of my best coyote years ever. This year mild temps, dry conditions, folks driving everywhere and issues with theft, and catch rate is way down. Some years they plant corn some years its beans. Every year is different.
Roll with it. Every year is different with new challenges. I digest all of the pro tips I can get my hands on, but I also realize I'm fighting weather and a lot of other influences around here than just my own abilities and techniques. Keep a positive attitude, keep learning, and it's ok to be humbled especially with coyotes.

Look up Tom Miranda o. YouTube. There is a collection. Of old school videos. They have a little of everything. It will get you back to. Basics. Keep it simple. I have found they reminded me of things I was overlooking.

Some techniques are universal, but I would suggest a video from your area. Tom Miranda's book is excellent and still applicable today. JabNE has some excellent advice for you.
