Dissapointed in fur sale last night..... - 01/18/20 08:42 PM

Very dissapointed selling to groenwald. 11 yotes all good none rubbed.(granted not all top end but a few real good ones. Two blondes I know would be cheap) All coon were large boars. Everything sold green. I will make sure I never sell to that buyer again. I believe his name was hunter. Never seen so many guys take back fur out of the truck. Should have pulled everything back out of the truck. He said his top yotes are $40 and top coons are $10. All prime December Wisconsin fur

Re: Dissapointed in fur sale ast night..... - 01/18/20 09:17 PM

Grony was paying $15 for big bores a month ago. Myself and another trapper sold to them Thursday. I was satisfied with my coyotes, but we were both not happy with the coon prices. $10 tops, even for big boars, when questioned the buyer said wrong color. They also comment one sow bellies not being well furred. When is the belly fur used??? Never?
I had 2 badgers, frozen whole. One was small and grayish, the other big, white belly and white tipped guard hairs. $4 and $8, said they don't have an outlet for badger. But advertise they buy them. I should have taken the big one back and had it tanned.

Different areas have different grades of fur. In my area coyotes have a $80.00 top and coons $20.00 for finished. I sold 2 carcass Badgers, 1@$15.00 and 1@ $25.00.

Trevor Barnes. Look him up. He travels to buy and if he comes close to go he will pay more than GFW for sure. He does all his own buying when he travels. I also agree that selling green is not the best option. Easier to refuse a buyer's offer when you can take dried finished fur home and store it easier than green.

I get that you didn't get what you expected. I don't get the buyer being at fault. You either accept the offer or not. That's the way it works.

I sold to Barnes this yr. I will never go back to groeny.

Sold 55 rats to Groenwold at Burlington, $3.98 average, about what I expected. Saw lots of carcass coyotes, not many put up skins. I think most of of the pelts taken back were refused by the buyer rather than guys asking for them back.

Some of the reports say that GFW has been paying $100 or better on some coyotes too but there is no way you can compare that to what you got.

You were offered less than you expected yet you sold them for the offered prices anyway. A trip to the mirror might be in order.

Re: Dissapointed in fur sale ast night..... - 01/19/20 12:13 AM

My buddy sold to groney last night. Got a $4.40 average on rats and a top of $5.50 but when he went back to his truck he noticed that was for 35 rats not the 45 he offered. Went back and raised some cane but the buyer offered him another $25.00 for the 10 missing rats and said they would count them when they got back. I wouldn't be holding my breath.

Had 3 coon 2 at $10.00 one at $5.00 and one coyote at $50.00 1 at $30.00 and 1 at $7.00 all put up fur.

I used to sell to an Amish guy - he was the kind of man that expected you to haggle with him over prices.
Sometimes I sucked it up - at other times I pulled my fur and walked. More than once he would come out to my truck and say "bring your stuff back in and we'll talk". LOL!!
It's all up to the seller as to what they expect - and will take for for their pelts.

I'll be taking mine to the state auction again this Feb. There is usually 6 to 8 buyers there bidding on fur.

That would be interesting to see a state auction. We have nothing if that sort.

As stated before, some of us do not have the facilities to finish fur, that's why we sell green.
LDW, nice looking coyotes. We're just not far enough west to get better grades.

Re: Dissapointed in fur sale last night..... - 01/19/20 03:07 PM

If you had already had them skun that was the hard part of the job. Coyotes, coon and rats are easy to put up. Get yourself a fleshing knife and a beam and some quality boards and put the fur up. You will give yourself more options to sell.

I paid a guy to put up mine this year. I am working on a building to do it in but just haven't got it ready yet. I paid 4 apiece for cat and coyotes to get them put up. I then traded the glands and skulls to get the price down. The gland and skulls and one set if skunk pods gave me a big break in price. Got 5 dollar for the pods, 12.50 a 16oz glands and 2 dollar a skull.

Trevor is a busy man, very busy. But he will take the time to answer questions. One thing about expanding the route would be customer base. Maybe if you guys would look to see how many would come to a stop it would help him make decisions.

Trevor reminds me of a old time buyer when I was a kid.He grades the fur out and explains the why. I've sold to GFW and was happy with price but felt he had an average in mind and did not really grade the pelt. Trevor also buys beaver tails, antlers and castor.

Re: Dissapointed in fur sale last night..... - 01/20/20 03:28 AM

One might think or feel that with far less wild fur being harvested that selling green would not be such a big penalty, but when one thinks about it with very low UE nationwide and with the very low fur numbers most buyers are running very tight ships and not nearly as many guys are going to quit a job to get even $3 bucks for putting up coon if there are only a handful to do instead of thousands.
With the prices being offered as many point out the buyers are telling the harvesters to bring up handled pelts. Also buyers can turn that fur over rapidly and thus don't need to have as much cash tied up longer term.

Some people believe that prices should get better and better as the season goes on but what happens when the buyer is getting orders filled up and the market can't handle much more? Prices will go down. Buyers take the most risk

Is sold a couple weeks ago to Richard Clark out of Coleman Wi. I am pretty sure he said he was affiliated with Trevor Barnes.
(4) coyotes at $40.00 ea. (4) 3XL coon at $15.00 ea. (2) mink at $3.00 ea and (47) rats at $3.52 ea average. All put up. I was good with the price and he was helpful with suggestions on the put-up. I've got a 1/2 doz years or so doing this so its nice for any hints etc.
Just another option I guess.

Re: Dissapointed in fur sale last night..... - 01/21/20 01:25 AM

I can see how that receipt would confuse guys as they stand in line...a good buyer will make things extremely clear.

I think those figure out to be green averages of $25.90 coyotes, $7.22 coon, and $1.61 rats? I would think the coon and rat averages could be double that if put up, which means that green price is robbery. Just my opinion.

Those $5-$10 coyotes would need to have been pretty rough. The old NAFA DG3 grade would fall into that range a lot of times, and those were put up coyotes that were bald between the shoulders.

Ahh, Clark is a good guy. Maybe Barnes will get bigger by finding intermediaries like Clark to help facilitate the process.

Re: Dissapointed in fur sale last night..... - 01/21/20 02:45 PM

On somewhat of a side note i have been seeing a bunch of horrible coyotes at the fur buyer recently. With the word out that Coyotes are worth a lot of money there are a lot of guys dog hunting and calling trying to sell dogs they think are worth a lot but aren't. Fist sized and larger holes in one or both sides shot three and four times and mange ridden dogs. Then they get a little disgruntled when they are offered $5 a dog or nothing. The amount of work to that needs to go into an animal that has that much damage if you can even work it is beyond them. There will be a lot of these dogs hitting the auctions as they are getting bought for nothing and hemmed up the best way possible.

I also think that with the trim market somewhat changing how we look at coyotes in general we are seeing dogs graded differently per the market they are in. Flat fur with little to no guard hairs just isn't worth much in this market. That is what I am seeing and being told anyways. I think the market is going to move more towards a bigger separation between good and bad as it progresses. My two cents. This will cause the buyers to be more leary of green fur they have to invest capital in on top of initial investment to gain return.

Awesome points!!!! Blood and bullet holes will never sell good no matter how high the market is. Same with poorly put up fur. No but wants to pay premium prices for a pelt that has a good chance of slipping.

And with the comment about the value gap between really good coyotes and decent coyotes is spot on. It’s what we are seeing with the cat market. The longer the prices are high for anything, the larger the price gap gets.
