#3 for Beaver?

#3 for Beaver? - 01/26/20 09:28 PM

Had a gentleman stop me as I was setting traps last week who asked if I could help him remove a few beaver. They are ruining his deer hunting property with their dam. All I have for trapping them is a #4 DLS and a 4 coil, laminated #3 Bridger. As the pond is frozen now and not real deep, was going by to make a couple feed platforms with those 2 traps and put them through a couple holes 20 ft. from the lodge (NY requirement). Does it sound reasonable - it's my 1st year trapping and I'm way behind the curve!! Thanks!!!!

Might work. You might go to the archives and look up under ice beaver snaring, also.

You should be fine. I have used #2 bridger 4-coiled and offset jaws before in a pinch and have had success.

For what it’s worth my Reg. Book pg. 56 says 15 ft.

Not the best choice but will work.

A 4 coiled No.3 will work just fine.I've used 4-coiled No.3 Montgomry's and No.3 victors for used in high crime areas. There used to be one gentleman on here that, with a partner annualy took 125-175 beaver every spring with No.3 Bridgers and No.4 Dukes, all 4 coiled.

Yeah, saw that. But right in front of the lodge is a feed pile poking through the ice, so wanted to back away and look for a channel.

No snares here in New York, unfortunately.

I use number threes here in PA all the time. Not aloud anything bigger then 6 1/2 inch jaw spread. Target the front foot and make sure you have enough pan tension

#3 bridgers is what I use to use for beaver. And they worked for me. Now I got ts 85s.

All I use is sleepy creek #3 coils and #3 double longs for beaver I don't really worry about pan tension.I did put MB 550 springs on the #3 coils after a couple years I think it really helped but they worked fine stock.

Try killing them once the ice melts?

I caught a lot of beaver in Sleepy Creek #3's......you must set for front foot and put on a drowner.

#3 or 4 long spring traps no problem on a drowning cable set up. Go for a front foot catch

You can set obviously up in shallower water when setting for a front foot catch.
