280 size corner to corner

280 size corner to corner - 03/27/20 01:19 AM

Could anyone post the overall outside dimension from corner to corner (diagonal). I have a length of 12" corrugated plastic drainage pipe that I'm going to use for an otter tube. I don't own any 280's but believe they would be the best fit. 330's measure to big on the diagonal corner to corner measurement to work. 220's I think would be a little too small. Thanks.

I'll check that right now. How about square BG's?

~12.33". That's on an unset Bridger 280 that I just measured. Bridgers have the corners that go up & out. If you could find a 280 in which the farthest measurements are truly 8" square at the corners, then it'd work. I'd go with a 220, or look into getting a RBG as that may work.

RBG's are an 8 inch circle, and are very strong.

Thanks Flipper. I looked at those last night. Looks like I'll probably use RGB's. The Illinois reg's say 7" jaw spread on land for a BG. If set in water, 10". Square 280's are too big if not in water.

Ours says no bigger than 7 inch square and 8 inches round on dry land, so I was excited that the 280's would work here and got some this year for otter. They also killed 45 pound beaver with no problems on dam crossovers.

280's are a great trap. Underratered. I got 1 of my otters this year in a 280. Sometimes spots don't provide enough space or h20 depth for a 330, but a 280 will fit perfectly.
My 1st 2 beavers were caught in a 280, so I'm fairly convinced they work ok for beaver.

Just go with a 220. Great otter trap.

I know their was a post a year or two ago about using corrugated pipe for otter sets, the pictures I saw where using square bodygrips but I remember thinking that the round traps might be easier to use.Are their many people that use this set and does it catch much?On a river that goes up and down I could see it staying working if otters are attracted to them much.

The RBG’s look great on the floating otter set but square works too.

I to am a fan of 220s for otter. Trails and crossovers are easy to set up.

I agree with AJE. I prefer 280's when both beaver and otter are in the mix. Most of my sets are on dry trails in crossovers. Have caught a good many of both, as well as some bobcats, in 280's in the past few years. I also agree that 220's might be my pick if only after otter, and would rather use snares if only targeting beaver. State regulations and weather related conditions have a lot to do with the tools we have to use to get the job done. I'm fortunate that we have very reasonable trapping regs for both commercial harvest and ADC work in my state, and that I don't have to contend with ice. But there is helpful information in some of these threads, and I enjoy reading them.
