1/8 Quicklinks for snares

Anybody have any experience using the 1/8 quick links? The reason I am asking as they fit thru the 8/0 swivel. I have 1x19 5/64 snare with an 8/0 swivel on the tail end. The 1/8 (220#) quick links would make it easy to change snares after a catch while leaving the anchor cable in place. I have used the 3/16 quick links a lot and never had a problem. I am not as concerned when I have good entanglement. The snares length will be 44" to 48" and anchor cable 3' to 6' and on fence go unders.

What are you snaring? I never use anything that small but I use them with traps.1/8" may well work with neck catches and lethal snares.With cable restraints,I don't know. Hopefully someone with experience with them and snares will help out here.

Coyotes. I am running a 285# BAD on a 48 hour check at most.

I really got into snaring last season and snared around 30 coyotes. The majority were still alive. I scored a awesome place with a high fence around Ag. fields and there are tumble weeds/brush to tangle up in. I lost 2 coyotes, both from snares I borrowed from friends. One the lock blew out on (old snare that was somewhat corroded) and one that the snare was made out of 7x7 3/32 cable. Most were neck snared. I am anchoring to 4 1/2" pipe fence posts usually low on the post. I am not sure if the entanglement was not substantial enough or my loop size was to large. I did have a couple body snared coyotes that were dead. I am just trying to brush up before next season to be more effective. I plan to run 200-250 snares.

My boy convinced me when I went with him checking his snares. He uses the large split ring and swaps the snares out on cattle trails in sandhills pastures he sets up. Coyote hits the end of the cam lock with a kill spring and they are short to this world. That is providing they get a run and a head of steam to cinch it tight on the first or second lunge. Replace the snare end on the extension and you are ready for the next one. Here where I live, it is a lot brushier and no pastures to speak of. I tried the ring now for 2-3 years and am satisfied they will hold in this cover and they swap out w/o a tool......... the mike

I caught a timber in one this year accidentally on a bait pile and it did just fine. Your BAD will fail on a coyote before that 1/8” quicklink.

When in doubt

Go to 3/16"

And always tighten them up with pliers, keeps people from stealing them if they aren’t carrying pliers

I ran out Of 3/16ths once so I used 2 I/8 sized quick links. I'm not trusting one 1/8 sized quick link.

Leave it to a coyote they always find a weak link, my area i try always to prepare for the biggest animal you can catch. The one time i thought i get by trapping prairie dogs with conibears and 1 foot stakes, wrong the coyotes pulled the whole works to eat the prairie dog on the hill. Found all but 2 of my setup s.

I have no doubt the 3/16 links work. I have yet to loose any animal using them. The main reason I was asking was the 3/16 do not fit the 8/0 swivels and the 1/8 links do. I have an 8/0 swivel on the tail end of my snare. The 1/8 quick link will fit thru the other eye of the swivel and then on to my anchor cable. This would allow me to remove a snare that caught a coyote and replace it with a new snare. I would not have to worry about finding the correct anchor cable length or have the snare and anchor cable attached together which is prone to tangling. Not to mention it is harder to identify the correct anchor cable length when snare and anchor cable are a one piece unit. Thanks for the replies. Any one have a quick detach method for removing a snare from the anchor cable with an in line swivel? Any one use another short cable tail with one of the tail thru the swivel and the other being able to attach to the anchor cable with the larger quick links?

Here's what I do: after the swivel, I make a shot cable extension with a loop on the end. Then I can take the loop end of my snare and hook through it. No tools needed.

Dean, That's what I decided to do. Short extension. I will still use quick links as I find them easy but I will stick with the 3/16. I have used them with all my legholds and never had an issue.

I agree on the 3/16. Never had an issue with them. I have however had an 1/8 that a coyote pulled the threads and straightened the frame enough to get loose. I believe there is a big difference in quality of steel used and the threads will pull on a soft one. I use 1/8ths doubled up then smack the nut with a hammer after tightening for a permanent repair
