Question on urine

So tonight I thought I would see what my dog would do if I squirted some coyote urine on a post. Instead of lifting his leg, he rolled on it. Thinking perhaps my coyote urine is bad, I grabbed a bottle of Reuwsaat's Extreme Performance coyote urine and some of his Private Stock bobcat urine only to have my dog roll on each one of them as well. Now I don't know what to think! Is all of my coyote urine bad or is my dog a bit wack-o? I don't want to go into next season using bad urine and beginning to wonder if that is why my coyote #'s where down last year, although I didn't hear alot of coyotes last summer so maybe their #'s where down anyway. I'm thinking I may have to make some test sets in front of a camera. What say all you experts out there?

What does he do when he comes across urine in the field? The "Extreme Performance " thing would make me think the urine has other things in it which won't make it a true test of how your dog reacts to natural urine. Ive never seen a dog roll were a coyote urinated in the wild but all animals are individuals. I'll send u a little bit of coyote urine that I collected myself if u want to test it.

He's still young but will lift his leg and mark around other dogs, haven't seen him mark much in the field yet but then the grass is quite tall and it may be that I don't see him. I honestly don't think we've come across much for coyote sign as I stated the number seem to be down quite a bit. I have seen him roll in places that didn't appear to have anything that I could see, maybe that was a spot marked by a coyote and he just likes to roll in it? PM sent Yes sir.

My little dog will sniff and roll, my lab will sniff hair on her back stands up, then she urinates and most of the time kicks back also.
Now this can be in a 10-15 foot circle.
Always find it amazing also how long the smell of urine stays , because my lab will always check that spot out for weeks on end.

USDA studies have shown that few animals will actually remark urine posts. Some will only do it during certain times of the year. Compound that with that most urines sold are multiple animal sourced urines and not single animal sourced and the remarking gets worse on those.

The important thing for the trapper is for the animal to come to the set to begin with. What they actually will try to do either rub, roll, lick or pee on the set is irrelevant as long as it steps on the trap before it leaves or starts rolling.

This sums it up. I know, when I take my coydog out to the bathroom in his pen, that when I take a pee near the pen, he will pee on it also after he just pee already .

Interesting. I have always been under the impression dogs would always remark over another canine's mark. Yes Sir has been kind enough to offer me some good urine to try. If my dog reacts the same then I'm sure there's a good chance my coyote urine may still good. Will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

Well I live In town on a very busy street. Every dog that's walked down my street will mark every spot that another dog has marked. I have yet to see one roll on any of those marks. And I might see 20 dogs a day.
I'll go out today and set up a urine post and see what happens. Well It will be a tuft of grass. Or maybe the end of my retaining wall.
I put some fish oil out there and I got all kinds shoulder rubbing and rolling. I didn't want to place any gusto out there. LOL

My lure testing on the neighborhood dogs was pretty interesting. For the most part I got a reaction on every lure I placed along the side walk. But there were some dogs that just ignored any of those smells. I'm assuming that Is true with wild critters too. And those dogs repeatedly ignored those scents.
Some coyote trappers I know use either Doc Bobs urine or One legged Johnny's urine.

I will agree beav my little dog when she smells where the lab peed she just remarks and moves on. But if its fox or coyote that I've put down she rolls. And is always useful on the trap line she rolls on there urine spots.

I was able to get some urine from 1 leg Johnny and Wayne Derrick. Both are very stout coyote urine. I might put some out to see how the neighbors dog reacts to them.

This might be a stupid question but here goes. Along with the lines of how canines react with different urine. Has anyone used domestic dog scat at a set? I know coyotes are territorial and will check out other coyote scat in their area. Im just curious how coyotes would investigate domestic dog scat or ignore it all together. I caught my first coyote using Mr. Junes two poop set with scat from a different area. While Im cutting my grass I see all the bombs my hound mutts leave in the yard and wonder if it would be effective ?

I would think any canine will check out any canine poop. Was walking with our German Shepard yesterday and she found two fox dropping piles. She would sniff it first then pee nearby. I've caught fox on droppings, but think it's kinda a one shot deal. They aren't going to spend a lot of time sniffing it. More of a back up set.

You can freeze out urine. Just pour your fox or coyote urine In a bucket and then place It In the freezer. Keep a eye on It and you will see where the water will freeze out first then remove the Ice and you are left with a very strong urine.

I realize that most of these folks here are far better canine trappers than I am but I will offer a thought or two.
Don't ever judge all coyotes, foxes, or dogs buy one or otherwise small sample like one coyote, fox, or dog.
Never say never and never say always.

I remember checking traps the first day last season. Pulled up to a trap that was sprung. First trap to be looked at of the season. It was a pipe dream, set, care was taken to make sure no lure was applied and or dropped except in the pipe, that was in a clump of grass. No urine, clean trap, clean cover.
The lure used that was excellent at ever other set and that is designed to elicit biting, licking, chewing.
Still a coyote came right on in and rolled.
In all honesty, there are some things that one will just never know. Used that lure at many similar sets and did well, no rolling.
I think that is why it is called trapping and not catching. LOL

Yes sir was kind enough to send me a small bottle of quality coyote urine and I had a chance to test it out on my pup today. Sad to say I got no/little response or interest from him this afternoon. Tried all 4 with the same results, could'nt even get him to roll in it like last time. I plan on taking some along on our evening walk to see if I get any other responses from him. Mind you he is only 15 months old terrier/english shepard cross but has had the chance to meet a few coyotes in person last fall on my line. He was cautious but interested and doesn't get rialed like he does with raccoon, woodchuck and such. As of now I'm not sure if it's the urine or the dog.....

Probably the dog. I found that to be true with a few dogs on my urine test. It was the same on some lures and those same dogs.
But of coarse It might have been that all those dogs were on leashes.
