Removing FMJ from Snares

Removing FMJ from Snares - 07/01/20 06:36 PM

I have recently bought some new snares and degreased them and dipped in FMJ. The finish is too shiny so I'm wanting to take off the FMJ and dye them.

Going to boil with baking soda and something with tannic acid like pecan shells. Is there anything I need to do prior to this to take the FMJ off? I'll be setting the snares up in south Texas so wasn't sure if there would be a better substitute for pecan shells.

Thanks in advance!

Haven’t done any snares but a soak in super clean for a day or two will take it off traps. Soak then rinse with a hose or pressure washer.

Think I'd just spray paint over the fmj. Next time paint then fmj

I'd leave out the baking soda, no benefit to it in that application. Remember its dark at night when animals get caught, shiny isn't such a big deal as folks will lead you to believe.

I agree with the Shiny part.

But !

A snare dipped in Brown mades me "feel better"
Then I give off good vibes. Good vibes at a set. In me mind makes a differance.

If I have BAD vibes at a set that I just made. I PULL IT. Weather its a snare, foot hold, body grip, DP or a cage trap

Spot on Newt. The hard slick finish and camo color makes Formula 1 my TOP choice for snare treatment.

Why would you leave out the banking soda?

It's not needed to remove the FMJ or color the snares and it leaves them dry and powdery feeling, and IMO slows the snares down. I'm sure the old school "boil your snares in baking soda and let them hang outside" will disagree, but IMO its an antiquated way for treating snares. Sure, you'll catch stuff in them but its not about how many you catch, it's about how many you missed and a lot of folks don't realize how many that may be.

Here's a lot more info on Formula 1 (and some whining from beav, lol, if'n you're interested...
