How do most of y'all attach your trap tags? I usually wrap mine around one side of the chain link. I'm just curious if others that have done it that way have gotten a hard time from game wardens. By wrapping them I have never lost a tag after a coyote catch. Thanks

Around the swivel.
But nothing wrong the way you are doing it. When One of Game Warden complains, I explain that should they get stolen we don’t want the thieves to find them. We want to be able to show the law where we put them Once they are recovered.
If the thief finds it he will remove it.

I also wrap mine around the swivel. Absolutely nothing in the regulations in the states I trap that says it has to be easy to read, just that it has to be on there. All of the states I commonly trap allow the use of trapper registration numbers so I have three lines of numbers on my tags with the states postal abbreviation ahead of the number. Never had a warden even try to unroll the tag, they just checked that it was there. Only tag I have had opened up was by some lowlife that cut one of my snares and then looked at the tag.

Thanks for the replies, I was probably over thinking it since a lot of guys around here use hog rings and leave the tag flat.

If I left the we tag flat id be replacing tags after every catch. Wrap the around the chain or swivel.
Another good spot is to drill holes in base and tag and rivet them to bottom of base. Never get chewed off there.

Water trapping I put around the swivel closest to the stake because the warden can check without disturbing the set. Wardens have asked me to do it that way. Since then I put tags on my extensions too.

Coyote sets makes no difference. They are not going to check it unless there is an animal there they will likely never see it.

I was hog ringing mine and last year i had a Game warden at a catch of mine where the coyote tore the tag off and it was no where to be found. Luckily he understood and could see my hog ring on the chain. I showed him half a dozen traps in my truck with the same setup and same tag on same link on every trap so he was cool with it. A jerk could technically of written me a ticket. This year all will be wrapped on my swivels or chain like the above posted pick.

I use to pop rivet mine to the bottom of the trap frame. I wrap my tags around the chain link or my quick link.

Around one side of the first swivel below the trap, same place for 50 years lol

I fold my tag in half around the chain, then i fold the end of the tag together and crimp with a pair of pliers. Tag is still readable most of the time and seem to last a long time that way. They do get damaged once in a while, but it is a fast way to attach.

Quoted from above.

That is what I have been doing for 44 years. Easy, quick, reliable. Game warden approved as of 2017.

Edit: I also use trap tags on cable restraints (snares).

Did mine that way was checked by warden in mn did not get ticket but was advise to not do it like that or next time he saw one of my traps he would ticket me. Talked to 2 other wardens after that said it was ok with them that way. I left tags on canine traps and changed all water traps as that’s what I was doing in his county. Just a warning for anyone trapping in Murray County Minnesota

Sounds like a lazy warden, Flipper. You had the tag on, so you were legal (unless the regs specify NOT to do it that way).

Metal stamps on bottom of the baseplate with state issued personal ID number. Unless the critters start packing grinders that ID will always be there. Most thieves are to stupid to know it’s an ID# I do use tags on snares.

Re: Trap Tags? - 09/12/20 10:58 AM

I hog ring my tags on the chain between swivels. I also electro pencil my ID # on a flat spot on all traps, jaws or baseplate and right on the side of DP's. Body grips, I remove all chains and replace with cables, I slip tag on the cable then crimp a stop to hold it near trap, then fold tag in half to make smaller.

I use Staimless Steel 1/2" hog rings at the termal end,of the trap chain. On snares I build them in to the termal end.

Just wrap them around a swivel.
