660s / 12x16s for otter - 09/14/20 12:17 AM

Hey guys, does anyone regularly catch otter in larger Conibears? I’m wondering if they weasel around the triggers or they hit them head on. I heard a debate the other day between some friends, one saying when they are underwater they will hit them as long as they are centered, and another saying they would easily pass through them. What do you guys think? Thanks

I don't think they are good otter trap , in my opinion they go through them with out getting caught .

I've never seen a 12X16 but I cannot see it being a good otter trap as a 330 is a bit to big also IMO. A 280 is the ultimate otter trap if your looking for humane catches!

Your going to end up with a lot of hip caught otter. And that's not a good thing.

I don’t think I would set these on purpose for otter, I’m just wondering if they will catch them. More of a incidental catch I guess. I know they are awesome for beaver, I figure if I use them long enough I’ll have to deal with otter.

I wouldnt want a trap to cover too big an area.Setting two or three 330's side by side will catch more fur.

Never owned one but saw one put perfectly in a culvert last year. Guess it's one of those things if you had the perfect situation but like Boco said two 330s will get you more fur

For otter fence if necessary and go with 280.

I run them and like them. There are many times where you have a channel that is far too wide for a 330. Blocking it down can not only be time consuming, but also case avoidance, if over done.
The trick to using this trap is to have a trigger that bends and expands the entire width of the trap. The wire bends horizontally. On 660's I normally have two triggers set up on mine that are connected, in fact many of my 330's have 2 triggers, one being the normal one, the other being a Circle trigger. If I'm in pursuit of otter only, I slide the circle trigger in place, with the other trigger laid free over the top. On beaver, I reverse it. The free trigger does not impede the firing of the trap in any way.

MB1216 is an awesome otter trap. T trigger about even with rivets. Reduces blocking or eliminates it. I only use them submerged. Clint and Newt use big Saveuas in there videos. Read most the neresayers posts closely, they haven’t used them.

I get about a third in the center of the back- instant dispatch. Almost all otter are dead on the spot. I use KB stabilizer which releases trap so not hard to tell. If there is a drawback it is that; i like them out of the channel.

330 submerged with same triggers are suitcasers.

No need for a bunch of fencing in a wide run, unless you're short of 330's.

I dont reach for a 330 when setting for otter....definitely don't need any BGs with a larger opening. As stated above...hip catches bad.

280s are an otter killer. Find the pinch points. Set more than one 280 in the channel/creek/run/crossover....

My otter trap is the 220.best for under ice.

it'd be wiser to close that large a gap with a few 280's lined up IMO

they are perfect for covering a 3' opening with minimal blending OR a 3' vertical hole at least a ft wide.

I have also used 3 330's side by side to cover a 4' opening.

also for getting that last critter on an ADC job that has seen a 330.

I never intentionally set a MB12x16 with the intent of targeting otter, however I have taken dozens of otter as incidentals in them set for beaver. Will they catch otter was the original question. Absolutely.
