Kill poles

I have a limited amount of experience with snaring,here it's cable restraints,so I've never used a kill pole,it may be self explanatory but I'm a little sketchy on how they work.In particular I'm interested in their use for snaring beaver,if they'd work.

The idea is that they get the animal to wrap up and tighten the cable enough to turn the lights off.

There's two concepts for the kill pole. One is the all in one style which really need frozen ground to do the intended job or they just spin with the animal. I use this style mainly for the speed and convenience factor. For beaver this is the main use.

The second style is where you stake the snare to another object then place your kill pole just inside the would be catch circle so one or two wraps is all it takes.

The second style is a tangle stick,I'm familiar with that,would the kill pole alone,with a short snare work fairly consistantly?I should add,in the water

If your talking about holding/catching animals yes. For being it's name, for beaver in water it won't. In water they are just a snare support and stake. You could add a cross bar so it's about a foot under water it might work though I think you'll need to make them longer as the animal can pull straight up on the stake when they wrap up. Without the crossbar they are pulling the stake downwards

Drive 2 dried dead poles deep into the bottom of pond at a 45 degree angle inside catch circle of snare. Beaver will swim around poles and as beaver pulls snare tite cable will slide down pole to the bottom and eventually drowns

A flat washer welded to the pole on option one is a quick and easy way for all year use.

My killpoles don't spin in the ground unless they get bent over at the top, anchor the snares at tor near the base of the pole and they wrap up fine.

I think the OP wanted the pole to kill beavers, not drown beavers. If drowning is the intention use a drowning rod or cable. If you want the pole to kill the beaver then you need to neck snare them, preferably without a deer stop on your snare, and use an aggressive lock. They do kill them if all the stars line up correctly.

You guys have pretty much answered my questions about beaver snaring,I'm going to have to learn thru experience here what's going to work and keep it legal.Our regs say our snares must be set to drown,that could be kind of subjective.Would that include a beaver that wrapped up around a kill pole and drowned?That question will probably vary from CO to CO.I was looking for experience here to give me some idea on kill methods and how I could adapt them here and yous didn't disappoint me.Thank you

I am by far not a beaver expert but I tend to get neck snared beaver in water sets and mostly shoulder catches on cross overs and slides I just finally went to all drowning sets usually with rods.

Get your snares up so the bottom is 4-5" off the ground and run an 7-8" loaded loop and you'll neck snare the ones on the crossovers and such too, in my experience.

Thanks ADC I had the snare and loop right but I’ve been setting too low.

Their chin, at least on the adult beavers, is higher off the ground than you'd think on dry ground.

Found out the hard way that a 30 pounder isn’t so cute and cuddly. First one I snared shoulder caught had to replace the cable on one of Mr Steinmeyer’s sting rays and the cable on a brand new catch pole also had to patch my hip waders best laugh my buddy has had in years.

Never a video camera around when you need one. lol

Beaver are crazy in a snare. That's why in certain situations I can DOA snare beaver with no entanglement on dry land

The only way I can kill 90 percent snared beaver is with a 4 foot snare on a drowner with a non relaxing lock. even then some don't swim to the deep end. some just sit on the bank and wait. Your spot on Buck, our cable regs suck, one CO enforces it ALL the next one could care less. Don't use a deer stop, I use BADs on all my cable tho.

Understanding that you can't use entanglement in MI but this is kill pole that has done its job, It's 5'8's rebar hammered into the frozen ground, I added a small sapling to blend it into the open ground. This kill pole is just like wolfies post..
