Who use 2 traps per set ?

Who use 2 traps per set ? - 09/22/20 01:47 PM

OK Like question says Who uses 2 traps per set? I use to NEVER run but 1 trap per set. But now on smaller jobs I am using 2 per set. I can do this on jobs of 10000 acres and less I On 5000 acres now. Just left a 6000 acre tract. Most of my jobs = 60% are 10000 acres plus. So on a big job I must run 1 trap per set. Alabama has STUPID 150 trap limit laws. But small jobs = I can see 2 traps helping me

But you could have made 2 sets 20' apart and caught 2 coyotes and been done with the job a lot quicker.

Re: Who use 2 traps per set ? - 09/22/20 02:28 PM

I'll use 2 traps on sets I can use drags on. That way if a coyote gets in just one of the traps at the set it gets away from the set. Then there is still a working trap at the set.

Beav. Not Necessarily. I am trapping in a low coyote density. Some place"s I trap 2 twice a year. This place I am on gets 3 times a year. I have been on this place for 5 years now. But I get your point. This location. Had another set. Flat Set. About 20 yards away. Double trap. Chain together. Tracks in the sand = indicate this coyote was alone

Re: Who use 2 traps per set ? - 09/22/20 03:21 PM

I can see the 2 trap thing when ADC trapping but with fur trapping I would rather set more locations then setting less with 2 traps. If I get a tracked pattern and the trap Is still set I figure that coyote is going to get caught sooner or later at that location.
And In this country digging 2 trap beds and burying all that chain would be a real pain In the rear. But In ideal ground conditions it would be less of a problem.

Beav. Lucky here. It's pure red sand. With the occasional red clay. I set multiple traps per location When sign tells me too. I have limited time. And need to catch those smart ones that circle the sets BUT want commit. So I started using 2 traps at ALL Sets. My notes show. About 10 % improvement Maybe more this trip. I concider anything under 10000 acres to be a small job. Used to running 20 to 30 thousand acres jobs

I had the same mindset as Beav, but I've given it a lot of thought. Ive got plenty of traps, I'll do 2 traps at a set after the coon hole up this season. Should cut down on misses especially with snow. The yote that left that track may never return!

Re: Who use 2 traps per set ? - 09/22/20 04:09 PM

If ya don't set 2-3 per location, how do you catch doubles and triples?

And, when 1 or 2 get a non-target, then ya still have 1 working for yotes!

My landowners want them GONE!

You get it Trappergbus! If I am on a 10 day job In a hard trapped place And on day 7 a coyote ALMOST steps on the pan He May not come back around for 7 more days. I will be leaving on day 10. And will not get him cause I am already home ! LoL

Lots of places in south Alabama have no coons or possums And skunks are all but gone down here So I let the sign I see tell me how many traps to set

Ks Wolfer. You are correct. That's my short cut off rib. Fits in that Leggets bag. I have another rib that linger and has the = ball end. That can be used to make coyote like tracks

In a situation where I’m having a tough time getting the backing to naturally guide a coyote to one side or the other I will use two traps. The norm is only one though, usually one is enough because through the power of suggestion and manipulation of a coyotes natural tendencies I can generally make them approach the way I want them to.

Hey ST, how many coyotes have you caught this year?

Re: Who use 2 traps per set ? - 09/22/20 10:59 PM

I’ve done it quite a bit. Very effective but swiveling is key. I use it only on small traps. 550’s and #2s. This is the chain rig I use and it works well if the yote is in one trap or two. Always has a swivel. All welded when done or course.

Tejas. I am on my last 10 day coyote contracting job. I have caught 285 coyotes so far. I am hoping to go back to Texas or maybe New Mexico next. I have use 3 different urines and the same 3 great lures from James Lucero They are = JL # 1 , Coyotero, and Winter Wolf Lure. The 3 urines are = Ogorman's = Boss Dog , Jameson's Coyote Urine, and Govtrapper's SMC urine If I get to New Mexico to work. I may get to 400 coyotes total. Fingers crossed

Here in indiana, our winds are shifting all the time. So I was introduced to using two traps at a set from a buddy. He’s says put the first trap where you normally would downwind from the hole, and then out the second on the backside of the hole. That way if the wind shifts, you have somthing guarding the other side. And not to mention, how often a coyote will investigate a set from all angles before committing. And it helped with my catch

Nice rigging Yoteguts.Question tho, do you guys run longer chains on one trap to keep the tangling under control?

Sometime I chain them separate Set a JL Dirthole yesterday. With Winter Wolf Lure , SMC urine, and muskrat meat. Had 2 traps 2 drags. This is a first night catch. Other Dirthole I Set seam to take long to get action than the JL Dirthole style. BUT I am hooked on 2 traps per set. Because if another coyote had been with this big OLD male maybe I would have caught him too? Going to make Coyote Water with this Old Boy ! LoL

Yes. When I do stake down traps I pull them with 2012 Toyota Tacoma. I have a long chain. And a ground down hook That I use My Fox Hollow stakes are welded to # 7 chain then attached to 5/16 quick link. Josh here on TMan makes them Furshed Fabricating. He makes all the stuff I use. It's tough stuff

Re: Who use 2 traps per set ? - 09/24/20 03:41 AM

I occasionally use two traps. I use two at flat sets some times. The traps are lever to lever, and the attractors are at each end and the center. Gland, turd, urine, or any combo of the three. If I use a turd I like it in the center position. This also works well with poke holes. Mix and match flats and holes in the same set, many combinations.

I also have a three trap set I came up with after trying unsuccessfully to catch an adult female that I had chased for several weeks. I later found out some one else had been trapping. She would not approach a set that had backing or a hole. She only approached a couple of my sets and I never seemed to have trap placement correct for our random winds. I came up with this trap and attractor layout to take these things in to account. Wayne Derrick suggested I make the set and let it set for a few days before adding an attractor, so I did. He also suggested using some thing that she hadn’t seen from me before. I hacked a t bone from a rotten cow carcass and drove it in the predetermined spot that I had marked with a small white rock. only set 2 per set if I have a digger, then set the second 1 back bout a foot from the 1 its digging up

ALWAYS 2-3 traps per location, a great way to get most of a family when they move thru.

Well, I just rigged up a bunch of 2 trap set ups. I run a lot of 450s in coyote country and usually have some that sit in the truck, so now I've got some extra kill area to spread out in front of em.

Re: Who use 2 traps per set ? - 09/25/20 12:48 AM

Where time constraints are a factor two traps per set makes a lot of sense if your goal is to maximize catches in the shortest amount of time possible.

The question is are you better off doubling down at each set or making more single trap sets.

It’s all about what puts the odds in your favor given your specific situation.

Doubling down at a set certainly fits the bill for ST if the coyote likes that particular presentation and smell.

On the other hand, having more single trap sets also ups your odds in that you’re presenting the coyote with more choices.

More sets with different looks and smells create more opportunities for mistakes & catches.

I’ve been playing with two traps per set this summer. I like it but haven’t come up with a system that keeps the two traps from fouling on each other. In ADC trapping where trying to catch them all I think it’s a good deal to use all the advantages you can.

Good Stuff!

I like that you're guarding the twelve o’clock for the sneaker coyotes.

When sets are a little more open I see a good amount of traffic at the two o’clock hour.

ST, have you had any chains inadvertently dug up on these two trap dirt hole sets?

Tejas. No I had no chain dig ups. I do like MR Ogorman's does Drag first Then coil your chain just right. Add some more dirt and bed trap on top of chain and dirt

Steeltraps,

Have you ever read Tom Miranda's "Competition Line Coyote Trapping" book? He shows his theory of the 2 trap set with a single dirt hole and then shows the set inverted with 2 holes and one trap. Suppose to have a comparable success catch rate but I've never took the time to get conclusive results.

Connor used to advocate two traps to a set back when he had grey's, cats and coyotes possible and fur prices were a whole lot higher.

Just throwing that out there.

When in that situation of adc or straight up cat trapping you might try this,,, I 'm a big fan of 2 trap's at a set on problem coyotes (or spring summer type) and cat sets when needed. I just bring trap and drag for both. And have been rewarded for it , by catching a coyote in each trap a few times.
And if i must stake I use one stake hook other trap to first trap chain. So now basically one long chain coming off the one stake.
I'am a longer chain guy24" to 36"

I watched some videos on there approach habits. I believe it 'teachers of the night' thinking locklear. Anyway, it was very fascinating. When you watch the way they come to and than away from it. Almost like touch and go til they either commit or don't. I know after watching them I did some different things like one in front at 12 and 3. And than another on the side blended really good. It worked good for me.
