Blind Set and a Fence Crossing

Blind Set and a Fence Crossing - 10/21/20 02:48 PM

I have a good trail leading to and through an old barb-wire cross fence. It looks like a good spot for a well blended blind set to me.

Should I use a camouflaged drowning cable and lock to keep the coyote out of the fence?

How far from the fence should I put the trap?

Should I set on both sides of the fence?

I'd stay as far back as you can on the defined trail as you can. Coyotes can get spooky around fences and makes it harder to foothold one

Set at least far back enough the coyote can’t tangle in the fence. I wouldn’t fool with a slide cable, just make sure your chain can’t reach the fence

Set a set on each side back at least 30 feet. Find one of their tracks and set in the track if you can. If you catch a coyote right in the fence - which you can do- a lot of the time they quit using that crossing for a while. If you come back off it a ways you can always pick at them and get more of them before they stop using the crossing. If you have a good group of them around make three sets on each side of the fence and space them out. Sometimes when you get one more for them will come check that coyote out and you'll be able to clean up. You never want them to be afraid to go through the fence so they will keep using it.

Good stuff, I didn’t think about keeping the traps away from the fence so as not to educate them critters.

I forgot to ask earlier but should I put a really small stick or pea sized dirt clod/rock to help guide their paw onto the pan?

Droppings are better. They generally don't care about sticks and rocks unless they can hurt. Mafia style trail set is probably the best way to go for trail sets

As stated don't let the animal tangle in the fence! How far back? probably at least 15 feet and then you don't need a slide wire setup. I would not use a drag here either. Set both sides. I would also consider putting out a set on both sides that is a flat type set or dirt hole etc. Yes a good blind set is good but if you have the animals using the trail why not increase ones odds. Also it may well have multiple yotes traveling the trail.

Thanks again for the help. I got hung up on that fence when I didn’t need to. I like the idea of the mafia set for the west side of this fence and maybe a dirt hole or flat set for the east side. The west side is broken up by some brush and cedars and the east side is open field.

Hopefully I can get out there this weekend and get some sets in.
