Marten in Utah? - 11/08/20 04:00 AM

Hello everyone I am wanting to do some Marten trapping in Utah. Does anyone know a general area to start looking, or even a fellow trapper to get some knowledge from here? Thanks for any help everyone I appreciate it.

Have you joined your state Association? Then it’s more appropriate to contact officers off their website asking for a mentor.

Plus Tom Krause has a good Marten Trapping book that you should be able to find in about half of the 8 to 10 catalogs that should be on your desk.

Actually saw one two days ago before the snow hit near Duck Creek while spending time at a friends cabin with the family. We’ve seen them a few times in that area. Tough to get to once the snow really starts to pack in.

I trapped marten in the Uinta's years ago, must have been 13 or 14 years ago. The link above is to a podcast episode where I gave some advice to a guy looking to trap marten in Utah last year. I hope you find it useful.

Sorry for the delayed response. I have been thinking on your original question. I do not know where in UT you are located but I have a close friend who has trapped Marten successfully for quite some time. He sets up boxes along major roads in the forest and rides a snow machine every four days to check. He traps the Uinta Mountains. Others I have talked with have also trapped there but with very limited success. They had to drive further to get to the mountains than he did and that takes an extra 2-3 hours each way. They are on my list to trap but I have not got the money for gas or the time right now to do it. I suspect there are Marten in other mountain ranges in UT but the Uinta range is the one I know best and have seen them there.
