Sold to Groney - 12/06/20 02:25 AM

$40.00 tops on coyotes then It went to $30.00 then down to $10.00
Rats Tops of $5.00 then to $3.50 bottom end was $2.50
Grinners 3 @.50 2 @ $1.00
Had 3 coon got $6.00 each all put up.

Never heard what green skinned coon went for. 97% of the guys were there selling deer hides. 2 hides for a pair of gloves.

Were your coyotes finished or green? Thanks.

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/06/20 04:01 AM

$1.50 less for xl from 2xl is a big drop but the top is up a bit. Rat market has improved but it is still a square inch market with big deducts for lesser size.
Thanks for posting. I think I may try to tan a coyote or two. One I have is a YOY male and poor colored so it is not much of a loss to practice on that one.

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/06/20 04:31 AM

All my fur was put up.
We have some poor coyotes around here so I was happy with the coyote price.

Hey Beav, what size were your coons ?

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/06/20 09:23 AM

The difference between put up and in the grease for coon doesn't make sense to take the time to put up.

No it really doesn't but personally I enjoy putting up fur as much as trapping it. Some people may need to put it up just to free up freezer space. At the prices we'll have and have had nothing with coon really pays but neither does most of my hobbies. Have fun out there

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/06/20 11:49 AM

Same experience:
Sold in Burlington last night, you know when expectations are low, when the discussion is about how nice the gloves will be for turning in deer hides.
Top End Prices:
Beaver: $15.00 $8.00/avg
Raccoon: $6.00 $4.00/avg
Muskrat: $5.00 $3.50/avg
(2) Deer hides for one pair of gloves
I wasn't surprised on any prices other than beaver- based on all the talk I thought prices would be lower, I had several small beaver. I sold all my coon green, all mid-November and got pounded as promised. Sold my yotes to a guy in line for his Bed & Breakfast but told him I had to get them tanned first. Also getting my cat and otter tanned

This was the 2nd year in a row I didn't put up coon- Guy said with their new automated fleshing- spend your time trapping, he basically pays the same.

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/06/20 01:04 PM

I had pretty similar prices. Just to add, mink 1 @3, 1@4. Both put up males.

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/06/20 02:27 PM

Well I never sell green fur It's just part of trapping and I enjoy It.
I also had a road killed mink that brought $5.00 It was put up.
My 3 coon were 4x and I would have liked to get more then $6.00 each but It Is what It Is. Takes about 5 min to scrape a coon and put It up so time Isn't a issue. And It got me $6.00 verses $2.00 or $3.00.

Anyone seen automated fleshing Eagleye was referring to or have a link. I would love to see it in operation. I googled it but came up empty, thanks.

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/06/20 06:23 PM

Groney had a automated fleshing system 15 years ago. Don't know If he has up dated It at this time.
The operator would split the coon up the belly then stretch It out and clamp It down on this hard surface. The knives were adjusted as to height and went across the hide slicing off the fat and gristle. I watched It when they first got It set up It did a pretty rough job at that time. I'm sure It was updated after a few trial runs.
Then the fur handler would zip tie the hide to a wire stretcher.

Those prices are pretty much the same as the last 2 seasons we sold to Groeny. So to me thats a positive.

Good price for rats. Sold to him a few weeks ago, all fall rats. Averaged $3 with a high of 4.50 and $2 lows. Yup...stick with muskrats this season

Prices are so bad for the average guy that Pleugers coon average must be down around $10 now.

I heard Hunter (GFW) say rats just went up to $5 top, I believe it was $4.50 previous.
Posted By: The Beav

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/07/20 02:06 PM

That's correct . But there aren't many $5.00 rats In what you show up with. I had 40 rats and had only 5 $5.00 rats. Granted they were all caught early In fact some of them were caught before the season opened. Was doing one of my ADC rat jobs. But I was happy with a $13.50 average. It's nice being able to sell your rats twice. LOL

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/07/20 08:34 PM

Beav, what would you say your 4xl coon was for grade and color? Six bucks for a put up 4xl is not encouraging. I don't have but about 20 and all are the first 15 days of November. Some look good. I have a line out now. I caught one 3 days ago that is 3xl but is really well furred.
Rats, was the break from $5.00 to 3.50 mostly going from 2xl-3xl down to xl? My batch looks like a few 2xl-3xl, a lot of xl and the rest large, medium with about 5% kits. Many would be considered average fall rats. Don't know if the uptick in the market will add some value to heavier rats or not.

I hear you, I've released a lot of small coon from my k9 sets, but still have some put up 2xl and 3xl that were caught in 220 otter sets. Sure hope they bring at least $5 .

Barnes will be around next weekend. I will post what I get. I have 2x and bigger coon and some coyotes. My daughter will be selling her rats and otter. I am betting Barnes will be more. Maybe not much but more. I also have beaver and Castor.

I don't see why anyone would pay more for rats when groney has kind of set the price.

. Probably right Beav. Good point about his five dollar pile. Makes it sound good. An average on a good bunch of rats with kits and mediums out?

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/10/20 12:46 AM

I had 17 out of 33 @ $5. I had measured 20 @ 2-3XL. Seems like they really grade tight on the sizes the last few years. These were rats from late last winter that I held over because they stopped buying early. I think these were the same prices he paid early winter last year when I averaged $3.99 for about 70 rats I dont trap many rats and I havent started before December 10 the last 4 or 5 years. I am going to make my first few sets tomorrow

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/10/20 02:46 PM

Agree, not a bad price for rats, for 1975
Posted By: The Beav

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/10/20 03:33 PM

I just looked at my check stubs from last year and Groney was at a top price of $6.00 on rats.
Sell now because historically speaking gorney pays better early In the season Then later when the rats are at their best.

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/10/20 06:51 PM

Sold 55 rats to Groeny on January 17 all caught in December. XXL $5, xl $3.75, L$2.00. Hunter was the buyer then also

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/10/20 09:14 PM

Not to hijack the thread but does anyone know with Tom Weibke passing will the son or son's continue the business? Last year my rat trapping partner took a few over 400 rats to Weibe's ( his better out of 514) at that time and average $4.15. Nice to continue to have solid options.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t?????His sons are both veteran fur buyers who are very accomplished in their own right with a great business including fur, ginseng, mushrooms and guns .

Re: Sold to Groney - 12/11/20 04:47 AM

Very good to know. I found out that the trapper I know that sold over 400 to weibke's last year sold to one of the son's in LaCrosse.

I sold to Grony yesterday. 12 coyotes, 6 @ $30, 4 @ $20, 2 @ $10. Two coons (I have been trying to avoid them), but 1 @ $4, one @ $6. Maybe I'll start catching a few. All pelts green.
