MB 750 beaver vs wolf - 03/17/21 09:15 PM

Ok guys it appears as tho the traps I bought from a gentleman are the MB 750 laminated OS beaver trap. Will theses work for wolves?

Or do I need to sell these and upgrade?

I am currently running both for wolves. I have not had a wolf step in one of my beaver ones yet but I do have faith that when the day comes, they will work just fine.

The springs and the chain/swivels are different, the jaws and frame are the same

Are the springs on the beaver 750 wolf worthy?

I'm sure they are, but if your concerned new springs fm map are about 1.40 a pair

Not sure what chain comes on the beaver 750, but I believe they have the MB crunchproof swivels. Those will hold a wolf if welded, they are not crunchproof in a wolf's jaws however. Not a big deal, weld the j-hooks and just remember to check them after you catch a wolf and make sure they still swivel, and replace them if they don't.

A MB 550 holds a wolf just fine if you weld all the connections. Not optimum by any means, but I say that as the springs are a lot less than a 750 beaver and is is #2 US made chain. The 750 is #5 US chain.

I have both and would say the Beaver model is just fine and one bunch easier to set. I would bet the Wolf springs close faster but even the Beaver model is considerably faster than any double long spring....which have been catching wolves for a couple hundred years.

Hi Chuck! Sure - the 750 beaver model will hold a wolf. Tack your connections shut and upgrade the springs as described above. In my experience the 750's are a great "dry ground" trap, but struggle with our freeze/thaw. They should do you just fine thru late Nov/early Dec here with careful site selection and waxed dirt. Once the snowfreezingrainslushbombcrud sets up you'll may want to reconsider traps or how you invest your time crazy

Jumperzee is dead on. 750 works great in dry ground, is reasonably priced, and easy to set. They aren't much of a snow trap though, particulaly in the freeze/thaw so common to North Idaho.

My suggestion? Use them, with the connections welded, of course. Use the money you get from the first couple wolves you catch to buy some stronger, larger traps for using in the snow and freeze thaw. Keep your 750s and continue to use them in the early season or low country, and possibly in any places where you have worries about trap thieves.

Bearcat and others what would be your go to trap for wolves?

I'm going to get me some Koros and try those for the bad freeze/thaw and snow traps. Everybody I've talked to who has used them claims them and the Alaska #9 are in a class by themselves. Unfortunately they are also in a price class by themselves. Modified TS-85s are a good choice for quite a bit less money. I also run some Sleepy Creek 4 1/2s and if you like longsprings (I do) they are a nice trap. Not nearly as bad to freeze down as the MB750, but they won't come up through the crust much better than 750.

The No BS wolf trap I here is a keeper .

Yes, I tend to group it in with the modified TS-85s, pretty much what it is, it doesn't have the dished cutout on the legs of the jaws that a TS-85 does, but otherwise it is pretty much a real nice modified TS-85.

Re: MB 750 beaver vs wolf - 03/25/21 03:29 AM

All that being said, I own a dozen MB 750s and as Mike said, they are a fine dry ground wolf trap for a good price. To get a better trap you are either going to spend significantly more money and/or have to do significant modifications yourself. Even the Sleepy Creek is more expensive if you start buying in quantity because the 750s offer a better bulk discount. The Bridger 5 is the only thing really in their price range and it isn't the trap the 750 is. If you can modify it yourself I would go with the TS-85, otherwise you are going to be digging a lot deeper in your pocket.

I took my own advice above, my first wolf traps were a dozen 750s, after using them I found out I wanted something better to use in the freeze/thaw and snow. I've missed wolves with both them and the Sleepy Creeks because of them freezing down or too much snow on them, wolves I feel I would have caught with other traps. I still set the 750s though, I've had one stolen and one had to do significant work to after someone tried to pull my earth anchor up by wrapping a chain around the jaws and hooking it to a fourwheeler, those would have hurt a lot more with a trap that cost three times as much.

Tree cams and brass knuckles. I really really appreciate everyone’s opinion and advice.

NO BS Wolf Extreme on the left with the baked on coating, one of Dan's modified TS 85s on the right. Same price point, but the NO BS comes more ready to set than the TS 85 modified does. The base frame on the NO BS is a lot beefier than the TS. Both are great looking traps, but for the same money the NO BS needs less work

Forgot to mention the bolted in jaws on the NO BS and the beefier spring mounting bolts.

Re: MB 750 beaver vs wolf - 06/15/21 10:42 AM

You are correct in everything you point out. But I still contend that the NO BS is basically a modified TS 85. I modded some myself and since I am in Idaho and don't have to have them center swiveled I left the factory baseplate on, which is full length and stouter than the one Dan uses (Montana requires center swiveled, so he has to change it). I did use the same lighter spring bolts as Dan, they come with the four-coil springs and obviously work fine, the NO BS uses bolts the size that come factory on the TS 85s. And I think when I bought traps from Dan it was about $15 a trap less than the NO BS.

No doubt the NO BS is a little nicer out of the box than Dan's, but a)he isn't the only one who modifies the TS 85s, a lot of people do it themselves, and b) I group them as a very nice modified TS 85 in my mind.

Thanks for the pictures, I'm sure I'm not the only one who likes a side by side comparison.

When I bought those at the Western they were within a dollar of each other on price. I didn't ask Dan what the half dozen or dozen prices were on his, just wanted one to compare with the others. I got a half dozen from Kendall.

I'd say you got a heck of a deal from Kendall, his price on the website is a lot higher, but of course it includes shipping, while I bought from Dan in person so no shipping.
