Fiberglass rebar

I had never seen this stuff before my biddy bought 100 sticks of it for a concrete job. 3/8ths x 20' long at some $6 per stick. It has sort of a b rown textured looking coating on it. I immediately pondered the trapping applications this product might have. 2 - 10 footers at 3 bucks apeice is a deal for a water stake for rats or perhaps coon.

Has anyone else tried this for trapping ?

I've looked at the stuff before but looks like it can splinter easily. It's not meant to live outside of concrete.

Did pickup some fiberglass T stakes at the NTA this year, those are sweet. Made of the regular fiberglass rod.

I don’t recommend the 7/16” fiberglass rebar from Menards for beaver.I bought some 20 or 21’ lengths and made some 14’ drowning rods.Had one fail on a huge beaver.The 7’ left over pieces I would only use on muskrat.

Agree withSNIPERB about splinters.You want to wear gloves when using fiberglass rebar.

I ran about 400 1/2in by 6ft stakes for rat trapping with no major problems. about the only thing I would change is buying 3/8in by 7 or 8ft lighter and taller for cattail marshes

I use them for rat trapping. They work well. They are not as nice as smooth rod to handle but the cost and function are good. The lumber yard by me sells a 20' stick for $4.80. two 7' ers and a 6' works well for me.

A.M. Leonard carries the 1/2" tree stakes in various lengths. Mine are eight footers. The coating is pretty tough, I had my doubts but they are several years old live in the sun and still no splinters.

We just switched from steel to fiberglass rebar at work and have been thinking the same about uses for trapping. I did make some snare supports with it to try this year in certain situations.

You could make some tbars with them pretty easy with a welder and some tubing

I always have problems with grounding when I try and weld fiberglass.

I poured a lot of bases for MRI machines I couldn't use steel re bar due to the way it operates . had some left over tried to use it not good for traping for all the above reasons.

Paint your fiberglass rebar rod as soon as you cut your sticks. Go slow and angle your cuts. And use a good quality paint (I have some old John Deere Construction Machine paint -- off yellow color). UV protectant house paint will work. I use mine strictly for rats in the weeds/rushes and color code the lengths for the type of soil I am trapping in. Lake bottoms are usually harder than a river oxbow but soil is different throughout the US so get one and try it in your area,,,,,,, at 4.80 a stick its a cheap education. I have used the 3/8" smooth fiberglass fencing rod for over 15 years with no problem but when this FG Rebar came out, I used some to try it due to lower costs. For the 3-4 weeks most part-time guys trap water (rats, mink, coon,) I have found it a usable alternative....................... the mike
