Said makes trapping in the snow pretty nice. Though he can only have a dozen or so in the truck at a time

the Vs cut in the logs is a place for your bait /lure to go and be protected from the elements. Very Matt Jones'ish

Looks ok to me. Maybe you have to be from a place that has snow to get it.

Using a (clog) as his backing and not needing to stake. Seems to me it would need more weight

So the logs are the “portable” part?

Re: Portable flat set - 01/09/22 01:52 AM

It's really simple honestly. Gotta trap with about 8' of chain. End of the chainc is lag bolted into the log. Cut a V notch or just drill a hole in one side of the log. As you driving down a two track all you do it's stop put your long down on top of the excess chain turn it so the V notch is upside down , put your bait and lure in the v notch or the hole you drilled and bed your trap in front of it. animal gets caught and the log acts as a drag

I’ve never used clogs but was under the assumption that 6’ to 8’ was necessary .

Idk don't dink I'd get too far dragging a 20-40 lbs chunk of wood around on 8' of chain especially in the snow

Re: Portable flat set - 01/09/22 11:15 PM

At 20-40 lbs of log, they have to be a lot longer than that tailgate is wide as my homemade concrete or big long window sash weights are only about 10 lbs and my 8' long X 6-8" dia. wood fence posts don't weigh that much.... Am i missing some extra added weight? ......... the mike

Re: Portable flat set - 01/10/22 12:34 PM

Depends on the type of wood, how much it weighs. Also whether it was green or not.

Weight wouldn't be a factor unless you really need the coyote not to move very far.

I don't see the point you still have to deal with setting your trap In the snow and keep It operational.

Not to mention chipping and cussing down into frozen ground.

Unless he’s bedding in the snow. Which don’t work so well in open country.

In timber they usually only go 20 feet with that setup, I wrap the chain around the log and use the end as a scent post. No good in open country its only for snow and timber country. I don't use long springs , 4 coils with heavy helpers. I have 2 out now on a timbered ridge 2 track 100 yards from a frozen marsh. They are due back any day LOL..
