Coyote urine?

Coyote urine? - 09/11/22 04:57 PM

Ok. How do you dispense your coyote urine? For years I carried quart squirt bottles of 2 or 3 different brands of coyotes urine. Till i went and took lessons from James Lucero. He basically said = do you really need ti tote that much urine around. Lifting neary a gallon of urine everyday. Just made me think. Why not use 8 oz bottles. So I tote 3 = 8 oz bottles now. Like that one. BUT over last 2 years. I use a Wal mart spray bottle after the rain to refresh sets with urine. I hang it on mirror. Drive by set. And shot a steam on the backing. At a angle That way. I dont have to get out. No stomped up muddy tracks. What do you use?

By the way. Those sprayer bottles from - Dollar General leak every time. Get. This one from. Wal Mart. 2 months. Use ALOT. No leaks

I use a fliptop like the bottom one. Used to use a sprayer, but a)they always leak b) coyotes pee in a stream very similar in size to what comes out of the fliptop hole.

I use it out the bottle that Mr. Bob sent it in.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/11/22 10:18 PM

* Most trappers I know, use a plastic pint bottle with a flip top.

But ask yourself this question : How far away from the truck am I trapping ?

If right out of a truck or ATV, I use a one gallon garden sprayer with an adjustable sprayer.

I just fill the whole sprayer up. . .and I'm not someone who uses a lot of urine.
But, when I need to use it, I use it. . .quit monkeying around !

Just use out of pint bottle, and refill when needed.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/12/22 12:20 AM

The 12oz commercial spray bottles work pretty well. I used them last year. I’m going back to the 8oz flip top lid bottles just for ease of storage. I carry about 5 different urines, fox, cat, 3 different coyotes. Flip tops just fit better in the bait bucket or bag. Very seldom do I get to trap out of the truck. Our roads are just to bad.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/12/22 12:34 AM

I like flip tops too. Least amount of leakage and mess I’ve found yet, and easy to put it right where you want it at a set.
I tried a lot of spray bottles. Some were pretty good.
Use what works for you.

2 months. Used almost daily. And the Wal Mart sprayer in pic has NOT leaked

I use 8 oz flip-top bottles and carry 3 of them in my lure/bait bag: coyote (black tape around cap), red fox (red tape around cap) and bobcat (white tape around cap). I keep the gallons back at the house and refill when needed.

I prefer the flip-top bottles for the "trickle effect". Haha.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/13/22 10:37 AM

Steeltraps, went and bought 3 of the sprayers that you show in the pic!! Going to try them out this season!

I like sprayer tops because IMO, I use way to much urine compared to the squeeze tops. How much urine is to much, or waisting it? When using a spray top, I typically just do about 2 squirts. Do, use a straight stream or a mist?

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/13/22 02:05 PM

I dont use alot of your per set. But I have lots of sets and lots of heavy rain. Thats my = squirt bottle reason. When I use my 8 oz bottle ? What a dog bout coyote size mark. About that much. Not a lot. Just a little squirt

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/13/22 02:07 PM

Longbeard12. Its depends. Sometimes if I know a big rain is coming. I pic. Grass here that has hair legs on it. I will get you a pic later. Then o spray. Cause it will hold on better.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/13/22 02:13 PM

OK Longbeard12. This. Is what I look for when I know heavy rain is coming. And this is kind of grass I use spray mist on. Look to the 3 oclock of the bait stick. See the little fibers? Those hole urine on spray mist well

No problem. Sometimes you just make it work. Like this. I HATE this. Caught 5 or so coyotes on this road. But cant get up it. Washed out. Can get a = stake. Cable stake Wolf Fang or anything in here. Drags only. Plus. Its now wet. SO i use these sets.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/14/22 12:02 AM

If you want that urine smell to stick around awhile put tooth picks in a canning jar sold for jelly. Stand them up in it. Fill it with coyote pee. Put the lid on. After they soak it all up fill it back up about halfway. I tried using dowel rods about the size of a pencil cut to fit in a quart jar. Coyotes will carry them off if they miss the pan. Dont stick around to long. A tooth pick in a grass clump keeps them sniffing if you stick it about half way in the ground. Rain wont kill the smell.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/14/22 01:55 PM

Danny Thats sounds good! I was using Lava Rocks. Someone on here said = charcoal. I tried it. Caught 3 coyotes. But you cant soak it long in urine. Or charcoal comes a part. But still. These are good tips.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/14/22 03:05 PM

So maybe I missed this in another conversation somewhere but are you saying that the lava rocks hold urine?

Yes. Got my first Black Lava Rocks when I went to take lessons from James Lucero. Started using them. Just soak in jar with coyote urine. Take then out with tongs. Put them where you want them. Charcoal works. Similar. BUT you soak it to long. It gets soft. Falls apart. Hard to get out with tongs.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/14/22 03:30 PM

Now it's coming together!! I wondered why you use lava rocks!! Great information!! Toothpicks is definitely more available to me than lava rocks but still great information!! Now I have a reason to go to Hawaii!! Haha!! Great information!!

Antonito CO and Des Moines NM are where most of the Lava rock is quarryed

danny clifton, thanks for that bit of information. Never in a million years would I have thought lava rock is quarried in those 2 locations. Thanks

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/15/22 08:53 AM

So back to the coal question, I am making the assumption that you guys who tried the coal are using soft coal and not hard coal? Living in coal country I could buy tons of it and if it held urine and I could keep it together by not letting it soak as long but still be effective I would definitely give it a try.

Does lump charcoal disintegrate? Or are you guys trying briquettes?

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/15/22 12:04 PM

You folks are making this too difficult IMO. If you feel the need to go to all this effort to use urine then make it simple or as complicated as you want. I never saw the need personally but here is a thought for you.

Go to the Dollar store and buy some cheap sponges. Large enough you can cut them into the size pieces that you want. Put them in a jar of the urine of your choice.

The sponge will hold the max amount of urine that it can for its size. Keep the pre -cut pieces in the container until you need them. Or / Once all the sponge pieces have absorbed all the liquid pour off any excess back into a bottle. If you want to further retard the evaporation in hot temps you can blend some glycerine with the urine.

If you want black pieces of sponge that is easy enough. Get some black Rit dye from the grocery store and soak the new cut dry sponge pieces in the dye. Once saturated and dyed to your liking squeeze out the excess water/dye and let them air dry completely.

Now they are back to being a dry "black"sponge. Put back into your urine soak container and soak. Start the re hydration process once again.

Some sponges are very durable and can be staked down easily where you want them to be placed. Wood skewers you can buy at Walmart or any Craft store will serve the purpose. Or just find some selected sticks at the trap set site to do the job to pin the sponge down. Long nails can be used also but I don't like to use such things much.

Just some food for thought.

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/16/22 02:59 AM

FWIW I dont use toothpicks anymore either. just give a shot in the backing whatever the backing is. When it rains i do what the coyotes do. Re pee on everything

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/16/22 10:48 AM

Its all great info!! Regardless if your using lava rocks, coal, sponges, toothpicks, or grass clumps its all great information and I enjoy you guys sharing your thoughts with us! I see advantages and disadvantages with using all but after you guys sharing your thoughts it at least gives us rookies something to think about. Coal is king here in central PA, but I really like Bobs thoughts on using a sponge!! Keep it simple! However steeltraps brings up interesting point on thieves! I don't know what I will do but I think these conversations give me something to think about! Thanks for all the input!!

When it quits raining, coyotes really do like to run around and pee on everything

Re: Coyote urine? - 09/16/22 01:25 PM

All predators in my experience instinctively know when they need to refresh their territories with urine and feces as they see fit.

Like Danny, I find areas that smell of coyote and fox urine as I move thru certain areas with the thermals carrying the urine scent to me. This is more noticable after heavy rains and storm fronts.

Particulary when I run some lines with an quad due to soft ground and not wanting to rut up field roads and field edges. It just catches your attention right away if you know what you are smelling.

I have never tried that but i like it. Am going to try it this season.
As far as squirt type bottles i wish they would make some with a longer spout for more convenient flipping
