Re: 2023 Annual West Texas Coyotes - 12/30/22 07:13 PM
Steeltraps, when you bed your trap do you drive anchor and bury the shock spring to the side of the trap? I always try to drive anchor and bed trap on top of the spring and chain and sometimes it’s a pain. From your pics looks like you have trap bedded away from where anchor and spring are, or am I wrong?

Yes. Now that im 50 for last 3 or 4 years I pre prill holes. As in = I walk up to spot i want to make ser and run 1 inch = Wood boring drill down bout to 18 inch. Then drive Wolf Fang in pilot hole. Then set trap. In harder soil. WHY dig more than you have to ? Thats a problem often. Trying to get chain and swivels and shock spring under trap. So why do it??? I have been trapping coyotes for 35 years. And this was how I was taught. Even = James Lucero = Had no problems with the way I do it. He said = YOU pack that chain down well, to not be under the trap

He sure does. Yall may never see me set another = MB 550 again. Its easier to have a = 24 dollar trap run over than a 50. Once New Year has passed and I get closer to Feb and trapper at home will get more = Extreme JRs wire lever. Took about 3 weeks from time I ordered them to get them. Was as promised when I ordered. Like doing bussiness with = NO BS Lures. They even sent me some stuff I needed to friends house in Texas.

Re: 2023 Annual West Texas Coyotes - 01/01/23 04:03 AM
I double footed four of them last year, all in wolf traps. My theory is that the pan tension was high enough on those traps that the coyotes weren't setting them off unless they got two feet on the pan. One of them was be one front and one hind foot. That was a first! And it didnt fight too hard. Lol.
Can't recall ever double footing one in anything but a wolf trap.

About 80% of my coyote trapping jobs are in sand. I have a few in red clay. I used custom super stakes for years. Last year and now this year. I have gone to making Wolf Fangs. Pre drill holes = with 1 inch wood boring bit and drive. Then just cut when I am done. I like the = cut and run method its fastest I have found. I go from job to job. So time is everything to me

Its says = 3 meters. SO 3 meters each way. On a road thats lets say = North and South = puts you at about 6 meters or 19 ft. So lets say its around that. And people ask ??? How could yoy ever lose a trap???? LoL! I use a = 32 inch bamboo skewer with a red painted tip. It has a sharp end. I push it down into the ground. Strait across the road. In front of my trap. So. Yesterday. Only 1. It was a small pig. Bout 20 lbs. But I reser all 18 traps about another 12 that cows stomped on. And maybe 6 or so steeped on by mule deer. Not really all that many non targets out here. Every so often. You will get = unlucky. And have a jackrabbit by both feet. Just an unlucky hop. Had 1 like that last year. Re: 2023 Annual West Texas Coyotes - 01/09/23 04:30 PM
That's very common, they want them gone but want it done for free. I tell all my landowners I have bills to pay also. They will then help out with expenses once they lose a couple of calves or lambs. Most have no idea about the fur markets as all they see are high dollar animals on tv wilderness shows. Trapping is not a easy line of work. Equipment is expensive but knowledge of where to use the equipment is priceless.

I don't think paying for trapping is an issue for Texas Ranchers. It's the threat of being sued and other common things, like leaving gates open, snares that may catch deer, cow dogs and other animals, trash and making ruts in fields.
Once they trust you, door will open.

Cattle. Is a different story. I think they are just plain cheap. I have worked for the larger high end cattle folks. Everyone that I am introduce to = KNOWS I carry 2 million liability insurance. Cattle ranches dont = care about deer. They dont have dogs where I trap. And its hard to make ruts in feilds that have not seen rain in forever But you are correct on the trusting you part. Gave up 1/2 days trapping to help round up cows. Im getting some good places for the future. Just taking a minute to do. Plus. I am not a great = People Person. LoL! I had rather be out catching coyotes

Re: 2023 Annual West Texas Coyotes - 01/09/23 09:26 PM
Texas is a big place. The ranches in the Hill Country, South Texas and other parts of Texas are like a different country, than the area you are trapping. We do care about deer, have cow/hog dogs and have cattle too. It has been this way for several generations. At one time there was very few deer, but now they are everywhere and so are the coyotes and just about everything else. I am not sure for how long the ranchers will be here, as it's almost impossible to find help and it's an ongoing battle with tree huggers who want parks and trails on private property
I am sure they are grateful for you to trap and it's a big help.

Well. The numbers have caught up to me on this place. Worked a little here around = Nov 20th till 27 th or so. Back when I had the 15 coyote day. Then a 12 coyote day with friends and dog training. Now at 10 -11 days starting around 1st of year. Around the = 100 coyotes taken here mark. MY thinking was = new coyotes would come in faster and fill gape??? I was wrong. Been over 30 traps already = 1 coyote. Guess after 3 years. # s maybe down. Well I will post up some new sets today. Things supper slow. May let another trapper run line for me. Save me on gas. Do you reset the traps where you catch a mangy one? I do. Used to hear some of the big name trappers say they don't because they never caught another coyote in a mangy remake. I'm sure some may refuse but for the most part I don't have a problem connecting again.

Silkyplainscoyot. I always remake a set until I pick up my line and leave to go to the next job. I dont really keep up with what I catch in remakes. The way I see it is = what does it cost to set a remake? If I am setting a new set. Why not set the remake? Remakes take only a minute to set. So it reallt cost nothing to reset? Some places I catch well in remakes. So place. It produces very little. But I always set the remake.

Steeltraps, how many traps do you have out now. How many is a “normal” amount?
My guess is about 95 traps now ~~~~Kind of like asking me = How many coyotes will you catch on 1000 acres in Alabama ? Well 1000 acres of hardwood in Alabama may only catch 6 or 7. BUT 1000 acres in South Alabama around catfish ponds? I have caught 17 in 7 days. I work everything from = 1200 acre Alabama High Fence to = 107000 acres in Central /West Texas Sheep. On 40000 acres or so here. Plus a few more sections scattered in between. Have ran = 36 traps in 1200 acre High Fence = and 140 traps in 35000 acres in Alabama. South Texas in 2020 I ran 110 traps on 3500 acres of high fence. Place had roads like spaghetti!! SO Im going to say = 80 is my average. So 80 is about average cause I mainly run 7000 acre or larger jobs

Do you ever run snares on any jobs? So places they may not work, but many places you could punch in 4 to 6 snares in the time it takes to put in 2 traps. Is a big no no or just the wrong kind of area to make it work. I am sure in doing your job you have run cable and know how to use it.

I have done ALOT of snaring in sheep country. Have probably had out 300 or more snares at once. Have also snared in South Texas high fence deer ranches. It would be VERY hard to snare where I am now. Im a few miles from New Mexico line. But country looks the same as New Mexico. Just really open. And lots of cows. On the few trails. That could be snared. Maybe I think you could snare some. But it wouldn’t be productive here. Just way to open And way to many cows

steel------ would airing down your tires help you in those sand dunes-- we use to do that, I love my tacoma. running 10 ply tires-- a real good 12 v compressor works to bring them up---- use to run a 200 mi a day dirt route for the USPS years ago

I caught a coyote last year on a set that had been out for 4 months, buried under snow for a good chunk of it, before it melted off and connected

KS it would. Because I have 50 lbs in each tire. But. Pros and Cons. I have some places with bad misquote then places that are just sandy. So airing up and down would be alot.
