2.5in deer stop law for snares in MO

In Missouri we have to set half submerged, and we have to have a 2.5in deer stop on snares. Along with min 5/64th cable and a swiveled end.

My question is, can a neck caught small beaver or otter escape with the 2.5in deer stop? Would like to set snares for the first time in addition to packing in conibears, plenty of good pullout slides and channels. Just curious about yalls experience with the deer stops on water snaring critters.

I've snared a few beaver but I have never necked snared any. I'm betting In most cases just about all snared beaver or otter are going to be body caught. And the 2.5 Inch deer stop won't be an Issue.

Is there a lock restriction?

Almost all my beaver that I snared are neck snared. Using an aggressive locking snared lock you shouldn't have an issue outside of kit beaver,which will be hip caught most likely if you're restricted to half submerged.

I've snared a lot of beaver and can count on 1 hand those have been neck snared (they don't have much of a neck...it's a wedge from head to shoulders.

Most beaver get their head and one or both front legs thru snare.

I set my snares higher than what is standard when i can snare em on land.. Is rather havr misses than a body catch in a snare.. doing a control job od a different story.

The wildlife code of MO just states that there must be a mechanical lock when comes to snares. Would like to build them to also be Arkansas legal, which states a one-piece lock.

What type of lock would you recommend?

I have to use a relaxing snare lock here In WI so I'm not going to recommend the type of lock you should use.

Most of my beaver control work states I have to remove the beaver from the property ALIVE. And I can only use non lethal methods. I don't see much snare damage with my set up. 90% of the beaver i catch are sold as hatters so a little damage Is not a issue.

The beaver just sets there like a dog on a leash. Then the fun begins. LOL

I thought you didn't have to use deer stops on water sets and you could use the locking locks? I don't snare beaver but did they change that rule?

3CSR 10-20.805 (59) Snare: A device for the capture of
furbearers in a water-set by use of a cable
loop. Snares must be constructed of cable
that is at least five sixty-fourths inch (5/64")
and no greater than one- eighth inch (1/8") in
diameter, and must be equipped with a
mechanical lock and anchor swivel.

3 CSR 10-8.505 4) Use of Snares and Cable Restraint
Devices.
(A) Snares (except as provided in subsec-
tion (4)(B)) must be set in water and must
have the loop at least half (1/2) submerged.
Snares (as defined in 3 CSR 10-20.805) must
have a loop fifteen inches (15") or less in
diameter when set and must have a stop
device that prevents the snare from closing to
less than two and one-half inches (2 1/2") in
diameter.

Same almost all mine are neck snared. And we have to have deer stops. They will hold small beaver as well.

If you can legally use them, use a cam lock. I specifically like the mini-cam locks for all my snares. Beaver on rare occasions will push the snare off their neck, with a relaxing type lock, using their back foot, according to Dale Billingsley.

I use 3/32 7x7 cable but 5/64 will work good too.
