Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/14/23 01:44 AM
Today. Picked up muddy traps. Bonus coyote for landowners

Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/14/23 01:47 AM
OK caught up. Home. Will get tires rotated and brakes on tomorrow. Put scope on rifle. Load up some more traps. Then headed out in afew days to southwest texas. Few miles from Mexico

Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/14/23 01:49 AM
I have decided. From this point on = use more drags. Use less urine. Use less lure. No more pipes. No more dirt holes. I doubt you will ever see me use another dirt hole or pipe again

Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/14/23 01:56 AM
Is that because you are trapping pressured coyotes or do you think flat sets out perform other sets on all coyotes?

Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/14/23 02:06 AM
It’s about time you can’t use bait anyways, ants are starting to roam.
Great pics! And can’t wait to hear about the drags. I have a dozen made up, just nervous about using them. I’m finally on a property I can give them a shot.
Good luck in Texas and thanks for all your help.
Like always, you are getting it done

[quote=8117 Steve R]Is that because you are trapping pressured coyotes or do you think flat sets out perform other sets on all coyotes?[/quote. Trapped these properties for almost 10 years now. 3 times a year. Feel that = bait has been causing some problems = walk bys stall outs general = trap shyness. PLUS everyone around me uses dirtholes and pipes. Plus. This trip. I made some small and simple changes. That really made a difference

What is your usual trap placement on your flat sets?
Posted By: steeltraps
Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/14/23 01:22 PM
Canebrake. To be honest. I never think much about it. May sound hard to explain but. After 35 years of catching coyotes I just = think about how The coyote will approach the set. What the wind will be doing. And set trap accordingly. I generally of set to the right. Think about how = a coyote usually works a set on a 45 and think about the wind That my main thing. BUT. I would say = 9 inch back. 3 inch right. Would be close or often closes used overall pattern of how I might set trap. Maybe LOL!

On drags or stakes???
Posted By: jalstat
Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/17/23 11:05 AM
I just look at the pics and assume they are on stakes , I see a long chain with springs to control shock I do believe , just always used short chains on stakes in Illinois I am only asking because I know you know your stuff . Jon
Posted By: steeltraps
Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/17/23 11:17 AM
Yes. I use shock springs on both drags and stakes. States that have longer check times. Is a good reason for shock bars. Less damage.

Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/20/23 03:08 PM
Cool pics ...what's your reasoning with switching to drags? An on your locations do you set there bc of sign or from past trips an experiences or just feels right ? Just kinda studying the locations in your pics seeing if I can pick up on the why

Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/20/23 10:15 PM
Sorry been out running snares Keystone Killer. The main reason I am running drags is = THE OWNERS!!! They did not want to see any coyotes =. Flopping Around off main roads. So we will use drags. Plus in the long run on 100s of thousands of acres = Drags in the end and in the long term over hopefully 20 more yearsvof trapping 365 will save lots of money for me. I look at = MJ 600 Sterlings and 1 piece drags as = investment. I dont look at = High cost to by like some trappers do. I look at down the road. Plus. In West Texas. I will have a Blue Lacey to follow up animals quickly

Re: Few Coyotes Pictures - 03/21/23 04:32 AM
I gave up on the dirt holes myself. Just too many coons digging them out.

I would have never guessed that to be the reason for using drags.
But if they keep writing good checks, do what makes them happy

I am basically on 2 large ranches. With enough work to keep me here year round. At a price. I MAY not be able to say no too!! In 30 -4O days.I will make a major decision. Stay in West Texas OR go. Back to Alabama. I can use some Wolf Fangs.

Not frozen or going to receive 2” of snow/hr. Chopping and shoveling are overrated.
