How long of chain for 1.5 - 04/23/24 03:05 AM

Since I started trapping I have just used the chain that came on the trap. But this year I want to put #2 MB chain ( The Good Stuff ) on my 1.5 coon, mink, and muskrat traps. How long would you guys recommend the chain to be for coon, mink, and muskrat if I mostly run blind sets and pocket sets.

Thanks!

I think I added about 24" and a swivel at the end. This gave me about 3' and a place to slide the stake through. May be a little overkill but it works for me.

My chains on my 1 1/2 coils are about 14" long with a mid chain swivel. You can change out that stock chain but I don't feel It's necessary.

I don't see the need to upgrade the chain on any 1.5s. I would, however, add a mid chain swivel.

I got about 3 foot on my long chain traps. Added swivels also! For me its that sometimes you cant find a decent staking spot near your set. Rocks roots, sand etc

On drought years when the drowner rigs won’t drown I have a seperate group of 1 1/2 coils long chained at 3 ft with extra swivels and do a 24 hr check.

I have my 1.5 coils with the standard chain with a swivel and then a stake swivel. This is what I use for staking on dry land. For using drags I use quck links and add about 4-6 foot. For water with rats. I use a quiklink and had about 1 foot of cable with a slip opening to attach to my bamboo stakes.

I like 3ft total with 3-4 swivels and sometimes a hagz swivel at the end of it. I use all of mine for rats though so I would probably go shorter if I was using it for mainly coons.

absolutely no need for welded link chain on your water traps. 2/0 twin loop is fine and alot cheaper. we run all duke 1 1/2s, and they have a swivel on the chains end. we add a j-hook and 8 links (4 double links) of 2/0, then a heavy duty staking ring at the end. we run 99% pockets. we can short chain through the swivel, or through the ring at chains end. all 3/8th rebar stakes, t-top and 30 inches long. we have about 800 of these traps, all rigged the same, and all with the same mods. we find theyll work in almost any terrain. we can also double or triple stake through the same ring if needed. this is the most efficient rig for our terrain.

Sounds like a good set up.
Whatever you decide to go with I'd set them all up exactly the same. Much more effiecent that way.

what trapdog said. standardize all your water traps. one size fits all saves time and effort.

I run 3-4 feet of chain on my coon traps as i dont run drowners anymore for anything except special circumstances where I need em out of sight/doa or beaver and otter. MInk and muskrat will be DOA and the raccoons normally are napping on the bank and DRY!!!!!!!!!!

Where do you put all that chain when you make a pocket set? Just wondering as I've never used long chains - I just run the standard with a mid chain swivel. I also bury it as much as possible.

Just toss it towards the stake. Just keep it out of the approach of the animals
