Very old hand forged with single pin construction(jaws ). Big trap but must have been for beaver due to the lack of teeth. I would guess that it dates between 1800 and 1850. Mostly all original, one knuckle spring is likely original and the smaller is a later replacement. Jaw form is unusually long for width. I would GUESS that it was constructed by an experienced smith in the northeastern US.

I think the two rivets on the pan plate indicates a much larger pan, originally.
Also appears to be a nut on the pan post. That's kinda different. IMO

That's a really neat old trap. It's amazing the variety in the old trap designs, before everything became mass produced.

Arturo,

Where did you pick up that trap? There was a very well known wolf trapper in northern Minnesota that made a lot of his wolf traps from gathered parts. His name was Buck Snyder and one of the distinguishing features of his traps was a small pan.

He worked for the Minnesoata DNR doing ADC work in the '50-'60's and was very well known in northern Minnesota.

I remember hearing somewhere that's it's not a great idea to compress the early hand forged springs as they can sometimes break.

Thanks everyone for your input. I thought it was a unique trap too and bought it for that reason.
