I just bought a newhouse 48, and I'm curious if it is original. Did the 48s have a bolted on pan?

Your # 48 does look to be all original except for the bolt on the pan. That is a trapper modification for pan tension. The rivet was removed and the bolt was added.

Your trap is worth around $100. Yes, that is the original chain for that trap, 5' kink less.
