#3 OFF SET JAWS WITH TEETH - 03/26/22 02:59 PM

All the old, vintage, original #3 off sets I have seen have a casting mark on outside of the left jaw just above the jaw post. I have seen some sets of # 3 offsets sell on Ebay with out these casting marks for big bucks...There is a set on Ebay now, that have no side view. Ask the seller where he got them from..There are alot of new collectors out there that dont know stuff and just buy...A REPRO should be stated as such. If it is "REAL" GREAT!!!

trapdog, you are correct. Not only do these #3 offset jaws being sold on Ebay not have the part #, the quality of the casting gives them away. They are grainy, not the quality of the original Newhouse jaws. This seller has lots of traps and parts that are not original, Buyer beware.

This is the Item description on the Ebay listing.

"You are bidding on a set of Number 3 Newhouse Trap Jaws with the Rare Off-Set, Very Hard to Find in this condition and will make any number # 3 Double long spring trap worth 6 to $700.00, Just seen one sold on ebay last month.. Thanks for Viewing and Good Luck Bidding!"

He hauls a set of those grainy jaws out every couple of months and people still snap them up. I think he has a tight twist drag up that’s supposedly a Newhouse also but it’s not.

Could you put a link to them? I could not locate them on ebay and would appreciate learning what these look like.
Thanks

Here are a couple of photos from the last listing. Look closely and you can see the poor casting quality, not comparable with original Newhouse production in my opinion.

Thanks deer hunter...I am pretty sure the real stuff was tumbled. That would give the parts a smooth appearance and knock off the sharp edges. The trap clamp that just sold has the same rough look..

Trap Dog,

When you say the correct #3 has a casting mark on the left outside jaw, do you mean the sprue ?

Can you post a picture?

If you don't know how to post a picture I can help you with that, just send a PM.

Thanks

I have the original Newhouse jaw pattern for #3 os w/ teeth (pattern # 1044). It still has the sprue attached to left jaw leg when facing inside edge (teeth pointing toward you). When these sprues were ground off (fettled) after casting, they left a visible mark on the assembled jaw. Every #3 os w/ teeth that came from SNOC (or ATC) has this mark. All parts at OC foundries were annealed for 6-7 days in limestone at 1600 deg. After fettling, parts were tumbled in saw dust & leather scraps.

As far as surface texture, after WWII, progressive visual changes in parts over the years ran parallel with alterations in metallurgy and abbreviated heat treatment, and can be used to help verify trap production periods. Use of Compacted Graphite Iron along with in-mold heat treatment (24 hrs or less) left newer trap parts with a rough textured grey surface (almost porous appearance) when compared to the smooth dark brown patina of their predecessors.

Much more on both in my book.

Dan,

Thank you for that clarification. I have a 3 offset with teeth, and even though I had a couple long time collectors verify it's authenticity before buying, it's nice to know it's correct.
