What cage trap do you like best for groundhogs and why?

Most likely an opinion response.Any adequate sized cage will be productive. At least a 10" x 10" X 30" , I prefer safeguards for baited set ups. Double doors are effective in some senarios also and smaller cages for juveniles during that time of year.

Comstocks - find a hole or trail set trap - wait - then collect animal

If in the right area why waste money on an expensive trap? I use snares on my rural jobs and just like all the fuss on no bait needed its game over.Im sure the traps are great but it isnt the trap it IS LOCATION.You can buy a trap from tractor supply and catchem all day long but if your making your living doing it I wouldnt recomend them as they wont hold up to daily abuse.Fact is they can be caught in anything same as any other varmit out there so no need to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment if not needed the trap dosent catch them it holds them and thats what you need to consider.

Can't use snares or coni's in Mo. The Comstock Cage would be my first choice, but it's a PITA to set compared with others.

Snares are one time use items in most cases. Do the math on 3 doz. snares compared to the cost of a good cage trap.Snares are a more expensive tool over time of use. A good cage trap is reusable for potentially hundreds of captures and will pay for itself many times over with reasonable maintenance. If you make your own snares you save a little over retail purchases and some $$ if you can use the locks and swivels over again.

For use in most of our ADC work scenarios snares would not be acceptable. They allow too much animal movement, potential entanglement opportunities and damage to landscape areas, lattice etc. when snared. Also the attention they can bring to concerned kids, family dogs torture toy, customers, passerbys or playing tug of war with a den snared hog.

Just not a good tool choice for our use in most domestic settings from my experience of 40 years.Been there done all of that before most knew what ADC was all about. For rural located homes and farm use there are more options for snare use and no concern for dispatching animals if needed in front of nosey individuals.

Sorry to have upset you Bob.I did say rural areas i.e. large farms and such no folks,no kids,no fancy lawns jeez us h #$%@! you all need to calm down a bit just because I havent done this for forty years you act as though Im an idiot.I have cage trapped more than my fair share of g.hogs and probably more than most.I do work in some high dollar areas and only use cages,I was simply stating a fact and I do make my own snares as well as bait and cages for the most part so dont go trying to belittle me for trying to help someone.I know I recieved plenty of help from others on here that were gracious enough to offer advise and you were one of them,So I am just trying to return the favor.Thank you.

Thanks guys.I agree on snares i use some but most times you just can,t because of where i am.
I have 4 different cages now but was just woundering if there was something above the others single door double ect.

Re: cage traps for groundhogs - 07/04/12 11:32 AM

I use a comstock or advanced power double door with a nose cone for a positive set if possible, as far as baiting, any well built single door trap should work!

No personal attack or criticism intended in any way. Just voicing my thoughts on a typical subject with some facts of my own years experience as was relevant to the initial question. We all certainly have varying thoughts and recommendations on numerous subjects. Just another one of those topics where many share their thoughts to help cover the topic with information.

The fact remains there are many ways to resolve a problem. And the method is only limited by ones own knowledge, experience and each particular scenario as to what is most appropriate under those on site conditions.

A 160 over the hole, covered with wire.

Re: cage traps for groundhogs - 07/06/12 05:28 AM

Wouldn't stress about it Bob. I didn't interpret any criticism, nor in your reply did you indicate that you were upset in any way, shape or form.

This is one of the reasons you don't see me post here much or definitely not in the Trapper Talk forum anymore.

Some people just like to sit there cocked and loaded and wait for anyone to dispute or disagree with what they say.

People just need to take what's written in its literal meaning when reading a reply and stop telling others what there mindset was when they wrote them.

Pocket jax I didnt mean for anyone to stress over anything. You talk of reading things the way they are written maybe you should re read my posts.I like you dont post on here often as it seems someone is always trying to belittle the new guy well I aint that new and I am NOT stupid enough to use a snare in a high profile place as MR. Jameson refered to and some other yo yo quoted. It didnt take long for someone to try and kick me to the curb after I posted.Hence the reason for not helping others the way that I can.
Im tired of folks trying to sell traps that have magical powers because they do not exist.
Mr. Jameson I have the utmost respect for you and your baits and from time to time still use them so dont think it was anything personal I just get tired of reading posts that if you have this type of cage youll catchem thats BULL you and I know that, any animal CAN be caught in any type of cage. Now if that cage will hold them thats another story.

Those are great. I had to save the picture. Are they both from the same litter?
Posted By: doyleflory

Re: cage traps for groundhogs - 07/07/12 11:38 AM

There was 4 in the litter but the farmer had trapped and killed the first two.
I have found anouther one to try and catch.
$ whites and 3 browns or 7 pups

Re: cage traps for groundhogs - 07/07/12 12:35 PM

Good deal Doyle. That is an exceptionally big litter for our parts. Typically 4-5 is and avg. litter for these parts. Are the whites true albinos or just white hair.Never have seen them ever around these parts.

Re: cage traps for groundhogs - 07/07/12 03:32 PM

True albinos pink eyes and feet. That is a big litter for here to 5 is about right.
Not many here but this year seems like there are a bunch. Not sure what i am going to do with them but it helps with the itch till fall.

Should be able to put a colony trap in the hole and catch the rest

Re: cage traps for groundhogs - 07/08/12 04:53 PM

As well as cage traps, I use foot holds and connibears.

I can take them out of a foot hold trap alive and unharmed. They ain't so lucky when they stick their heads in a conninbear. BUT, I only set connies where pets are NOT an issue.

Snares are not legal here for anything other than beaver.
