Urban Coyotes - 11/01/12 10:38 PM
We were awarded a coyote removal job that we bid on last week. This will be trapping yotes in a small oceanside town that has 4 coyotes living or hiding out on 9 lots, surrounded by homes and businesses that are tired of seeing and losing some of their pets. The town has contracted 2 other removal companies and neither has had any success catching any of the coyotes. I plan on using 12 woodstream catch soft traps. I decided not to use bait in my sets thinking they have enough food. I will strickly be using several different lures and urine at my sets. I am alittle worried about following the other trappers thinking that they wised up the coyotes. Any help or advise would be helpful. Thanks

I suppose, the biggest thing you can hope for is that the other two went in with perfumed nasty loud lure and calls and if you
stay more natural with urine and blind sets you might pick them up where the others blasted them too hard out of the box.
Never a bad thought! Good luck, interested to know what you end up with, plenty of others with more experience in that situation
maybe they will comment.

You're screwed. You got some edumacated coyotes there. Are snares legal in SC? What about collarums? You are definitely going to have to go into stealth and dirty trick mode to get these if they've been fooled with.

First thing you need to do before you you set the first trap is to educate your customers. If they expect overnight results then it will behoove you to go ahead and slap that nonsense out of their heads. If you don't you will be getting the stink eye by day three.

SC does not allow snares or collorum. The second company that attempted to trap the coyotes tried to use snares and was quickly reminded that that was illeagal. The city is footing the bill on this job and we have let them know that overnight success would not happen. The homeowners that live around the vacant lot say that 2 adults and 2 smaller coyotes are the only ones that they see.

Night vision and a 223 w/ a suppressor....just wait 'em out...no calls....but if you do call try something like kitten distress

If you are using lures go with flat sets, the first thing you have to do is find out how close the yotes will come to a set. if there was 2 other companies on the job and the yotes did not take off then you have yotes that will test ya. would set up a camera and see if they will come to the set or if they will stand off. or you can go to a loose soil area and see how close. if they are staying back then make your reg set a dummy and go back off and use dog or house cat pee on a almost non visable holder use your subtle blocking and really blend the set. if you make the real sets 2 or 3 days with out the urine ahead of time before the dummy set is made, then when you make the dummy set add the urine to the holder at the reel sets. so you are only on the set 20 secs. may want to try to get them all at once. with 4 dummy set. alot of work and alot of what seems to be non productive time but may pay off in the long run. then again maybe the first 2 companies had no Idea what to do and the yotes will be easy, they sure are not afraid of human odor or human presence.

If you're on good terms with the other WCO's you might give them a jingle and find out what they tried.
Some competitors will actually be straight with you as they know the shoe may be on the other foot some day.
Keep us posted.

This is true, if they are still in the area then whatever the other guys did didn't spook them into the next county. This is a good thing as long as none of them were pinched or had dirt thrown in their faces you may be able to get it done quick.

The first company used cage traps and the second company attempted to use snares. No footholds have been set on these coyotes yet. I'm thinking that it will be tough setting footholds in such a small are without disturbing them. Setting tomorrow morning.

you might just try blind setting thier trails and blend the traps in really well a stepping stick about 12-15 feet away from the Traps helps break the animals stride , when you find the trail I would make 3-4 traps per st and as many sets as I could fit onto the trails normally at least 2

Sounds like you're good to go then. Four this time of year sounds like the adults and a couple pups. I'd gang set to try nab all at once because the pups will be first in and if you miss the adults on the first go around they may skate on you.
I had that very set up on my last job. Six coyotes seen and I nailed four pups in the first 24 hours and nothing seen since.

Thanks fellows for all the good advise, seems most of it is the same well said and well taken advise. The local police were going door to door and letting all homeowners know of the trapping going on. There is a lease law inplace, but you know that not everyone obey's that law.

I would have charged double if not triple my normal price.

Well fellows, nothing in the traps yet. Had 1 trap dug at, looks like a squirrel was digging around the trap. Several small holes seen at the trap. Replaced the trap with a clean one and rebed. Try again tomorrow.

No luck yet. They dug up a dirt hole that I had some Old Grey Buzzard in , but other than that looks like its been 2 days since they visited the area. I'm going to put some bait out and more of the Buzzard. I just picked up that lure from Paul last week at the SC conv.
