1/2x1/2 wire for exclusion - 05/18/13 02:34 AM
What brand/type of wire do you recommend for doing attic vent exclusions? The ones I'm doing are about 5" off the roof and look to be about a 10x10 square.

Are you referring to making your own one way door excluders? Or are you referring to the type of closure material to be used after an animal has been excluded or trapped already.
We have always used 16 GAW 1/2" x 1/2" wire to screen the vents. We paint them as needed to blend with the existing vent cover color or leave as is if they are the older aluminum types.

Sorry, I'm referring to screening a vent after the animal has been removed.

Is that 10'x10' of 10"x10"? Use the smallest and strongest you can.

I make my own out of 1 in x 1 in x 14 gage black vinel coated wire. Have some on buildings that have been there for 15 years with no problems.

I'm 0 for 2, lol, it's actually 11.5x11.5. I plan to use 19 ga .5x.5.

In my view, 19 gage is NOT heavy enough. Just hard ware cloth. A coon will go right through it.

Jim is right you can get tear/chew ins with coon or squirrels with light gauge wire. It will give you some short term protection however I learned that years ago to go with a heavier gauge.
16 ga. wire is what I consider to be the best gauge wire mesh for all around repair and prevention work. We have covered this area in the past many times on this forum. Consumer grade wire grids sold locally are not good quality in many cases with their thickness or galvanized dipping processes. There are several companies that can provide you with what you need but you must buy in 50 -100' lengths but then you will have what you need for future work.
I like galvanized wire mesh products for above ground work and vinyl coated wire mesh of various gauges for ground contact or buried wire mesh for barrier applications.
