Department store signs bird nest prevention - 03/10/17 06:07 PM

Hey guys have to exclude birds from nesting on a big sign outside a department store. What methods do you usually use or what works best for you. Wasn't sure if the bird slide or bird spikes from wcs might be best option. Any input appreciated!

My answer would it depends...

Are we talking pigeons, smaller birds like sparrows?

Next question would be assuming big neon sign or the type
that is mounted with power behind it so a gap between the
exterior and the back of the letters?

Next question to your clients care what it looks like?

I've seen jobs done where you can see it from a hundred yards away and looks
awful but no birds...

Both pigeons and sparrows will build nests in spike if put where allows them to
get shelter or shade.

I can show you dozens of strip mall photos where this is happening.

Flex track (shock track) can be applied and powered to good effect with little to no ability
to know it's there, but costs more than some others.

How long of a warranty do they want and so forth also impacts.

If the sign has letter cutouts like say the holes in a "B" sparrows will gladly next in there and
pigeons if large enough. Ron Scheller has given some tips on sealing those out cosmetically on
here in the past.

Just a few thoughts, if you give more detail can refine for you.

Justin

PS- all products for bird work have pros and cons and also can
succeed or fail based on wrong application or user.

Can you post a picture or two? There are many possibilities when doing signs, but only a few will provide an actual solution.

Yes pictures are needed...my initial thought is flex track for low profile permanent fix...spikes are no good if they are nesting...even pigeons will fight spikes then

So went and looked at the job this afternoon. Spikes were already installed by someone. In the spots where the spikes are screwed up or broke that's where the nests are. I'll post some pics.

Hard to tell in the picture but the lower part of both the E in warehouse have the spikes missing or bent somehow and that's where the nests are.

So just replace the messed up spikes or sell a complete overhaul of the spike system.
