Snaring chucks

Snaring chucks - 06/13/17 02:15 PM

Just out of curiosity has anyone tried this and had decent success. I have a call at a local college. My go to method is usually a positive set with a Comstock however there are over a dozen chuck holes and it's on about a forty five degree hillside. Unfortunately I do not yet have a dozen of jims traps to set out there yet. Just wondering if anyone has tried and had success setting cables over holes!

Snared some in Indiana...set up the trails, well blended, 1-2 inches off ground depending on terrain 4-5 inch loop.

Snared them with mini snare poles on their trails where they were entering a garden.Gotta check often though as they will be all wrapped up but alive.

Done a lot of hog snaring over the years. Need to make your cables short and stake out from the den as far as possible. If they get down a den hole they can be challenging to get out at times. A real tug of war.

Cable is my preferred method for my large ground hog contracts where I will be catching 25 to 100 ground hogs. faster and easier to set and check. On yard work I will start off with a cage and switch to cable in 2 or 3 days if ground hog is not going in cage or I need to get that last one. My set up is going to be 1/16th or 5/64th 1x19 snare loop (what ever is legal)I will have a in line swivel and extension with a earth anchor or looped for a stake. my loop is 4 to 6 inches set most of the time 6 inches to the bottom of the loop unless dealing with young like this time of year then I will drop to 3 inches to the bottom of the loop. Like bob stated only give them enough cable to go a short distance down the hole in open ground setting to keep them just out of sight and calm or you will be digging them out.
