Need advice on raccoon kits in attic - 06/14/17 06:08 PM

Hello, I have a neighbor with raccoons in their attic, and they saw a sow with her kits on the porch just last weekend. I wen't up in the attic today and it was extremely hot. Raccoon droppings and considerable damage to the insulation and an entry leading to the roof had been torn out of the wall. I looked everywhere for the kits but couldn't find them. The neighbor said the last few days they haven't heard anymore noise from the raccoons like they usually had. My thoughts is that it has gotten too hot and the sow took her young somewhere else. I told them I'd set a couple game cams close to the entryways before we start tearing anything down looking for the young. I didn't want to trap the sow and the babies die somewhere in the attic to rot. Any advice or anything you would do differently would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would also guess also that they are gone. The trail camera is a good idea. If you fix the hole, make it solid. The female will likely be back next year.

Put duct tape over the hole and see if it is opened up the next day or 2. if opened there are critters there if not disturbed for 3 days most likely nothing there, as long as there is no noise that was there. Normal behavior is when the pups get to a mobile age and starting to be able to eat solid foods the sow will take the pups out and place them on the roof. and take them back in, she will do this for a few days. Then she will at some point carry them down to the ground and lead them away to see the would and teach them how to survive. I my area she will still come back to the nursing den every 3 to 5 days with the pups and spend the day inside then take them away for another 3 to 5. Duct tape is my best friend for finding out how the critters are moving at the site.

I think what you are saying is true for my case, it seems the mother is going up into the ceiling above the porch. Basically its a cubby with a wall and another cubby on the other side. To get to the other side where the kits would be would mean tearing down the wall and costing a lot of money. Is there anyway to lure the kits out without having to tear down any boards?

I just finished a job set up last Friday. Set up Friday took the sow Saturday a.m. 2 active young Sunday a.m. 2 active young monday a.m. Checked all over the attic, open walls, everywhere possible,so I thought. Realtors called me yesterday and said they heard noise in the attic over the living room. Took #5 today. The house was unoccupied for 2 years. Where this is going is don't be in a hurry. This happens occasionally and I return to the site and charge only removal and disposal fee. The duct tape works well for a soft barrier, used it many times. Guess I should of used it this time too, LOL.

Have you tried Eviction Fluid like on my website?

Not sure if you can get near the babies though?

I haven't tried eviction fluid cause it's just such a big space with so many inaccessible areas, it's an old house I'd have to tear so much down to get to where they might be. I caught the sow and one kit, I suspect two more(pictures) so I reset the cage and hope the kits will return eek
