Newer rat traps that work?

Newer rat traps that work? - 07/25/17 11:44 PM

I've tried so many of the newer rat traps like the tomcat,t-Rex and quick set victors but keep coming back to the victor proffesionals. In my exp the tomcat style traps are only killing about 50% of the rats caught. The others are not dispatched. These are large outdoor/barn rats though and I'm thinking the traps would do better on smaller rats. What's your guys opinion and exp's with the newer type traps? I also like to use jump traps and long's to catch rats but that's another discussion

I'm especially fond of the traps with a hole in the pan for a bait cup to stick thru. No Way they can get the bait without tripping the trap..

I've tried the tomcats because the wife picked up a bunch, personally I use VPRT's. Not a fan of tomcat rat traps. My son uses Victor and tomcat mouse traps, I've used a few, not even on the same ballfield as victors.VPRT's are hands down the most effective/convenient rat trap on the market.

To join the discussion, would you please list sources for these traps, especially the one with a bait cup.

Are you anchoring these traps to prevent live rats escaping with the trap? How? I usually anchor them using electric fence wire.

Do you have any instance of live rats carrying off the dead rat and trap?

Best wishes.

My local pest control people have a do -it -yourselfer store. I bought my t-rex plastic snap trap there for $4.

Always a good practice to anchor or tie off traps. Yes they will occasionally carry some off with a bad catch or some other interference with a catch after it has been made by another animal or such. Helps to prevent wasting time looking for traps that you know were there the day before.

Kness makes a good trap. Double ended weasel box, bait between traps. Cannot get much better for rats or squirrels. With the box you do not need to anchor traps. The short throw makes for a smaller box. If you run small bg traps you have to anchor. As was posted before they work good if you use a bottle cap for a bait holder on the wires.

If a bait holder is important just super glue a bottle cap to the pans. If you need a stronger trap just raise the two spring tails at least 1/4 inch by sliding a bolt, nut or something equivalent under them. Check laws first though.

Bob - I learned long ago to anchor rat and even mouse traps inside a house. A short piece of electric fence wire and a screw works great. I don't ever want a lost mouse falling down in a wall or somewhere inaccessible causing ODOR requiring a wall tear out at my expense. I note the number of traps at the beginning and the end of a job.

TDHP - That is a GREAT idea to superglue a bottle cap onto the pan of existing traps. Perfect size bait holder for rat traps.
