Tinctured Beaver Castor Lure beaver mound set - 08/09/17 03:49 PM

Hello All,

Is this the wrong application?

I use peeled poles and leave the shavings on site. If I can't locate a slide I just make my own. I also use guiding, nothing crazy though. Place a few peelings over the castor if your expecting weather then move on to the next set. Try walking the property to locate a land run and follow it back to the water. As far as tincturing goes. I've tinctured with 100 proof and propylene glycol and had beaver on both tinctures. A good mound and slide put in the right location will do it as well.

When dad made tinctured beaver castor, he made it to be used at a rub set for canines and cats. He didn't intend it to be used as a beaver lure. While it may be attractive to beavers, I feel a good heavy castor lure is superior to tinctured beaver castor in it's attractiveness to beavers.

I don't usually get much of a response with castor in any form this time of year. You might get a large male from time to time, but that doesn't really cut it when you are trying to catch all of them.

I don't either during the hot months. The only one that seems to work great for me during the hot months is my food lure. It shines at this time of the year.

Shameless plug, Boss? I will be looking into a shameless purchase very soon. Hot weather beaver trapping can be a huge challenge. I need all of the help I can get.

Just passing on my experience in dealing with trying to catch beavers on the hot weather. Now if I would have said Woodchipper is the lure you need, then that would have been a shameless plug - whistle

Paul, I gotta ask....why did Charlie prefer a tinctured castor over regular for predators?

We never discussed it, but I believe it was because it would penetrate the wood he would use it on, and it would then wick out into the airstream. With the vodka being so volatile, it would "push" the odor out. I can't say how long it would last because of the volatility. Personally, I think Backbreaker would work just as well and have more staying power. (Another shameless plug - lol)

I like Paul's Beaver Special or Bob Wilson's green lure at this time of year.

Hmmm, I don't have lure called "Beaver Special". You must be thinking of another's lure.

Well you were correct I misnamed it!

Dobbins' Beaver Plus Lure - its my favorite backup to Backbreaker
