Mole population density

I do an adc business in fort wayne indiana. 95% of my business is mole trapping. On average, most of my jobs are about 2-3 moles per quarter acre of damage. However, there is about a 5 mile stretch within my service area where I see extremely high numbers on properties. One customer in particular had roughly 2.5 acres, and over the course of a month and a half, I caught [/b]56 moles[b]At his place. I pulled traps for about two weeks, and now I'm back catching moles there again. I also caught 14 on the 1 acre property that borders his. It is Sandy soil near a river, but not all of the properties are in woods.
My question is, does anybody else see these small pockets of extremely high mole populations within their service area, or do you know the explanation on why this small area produces numbers like this?
Everything I've researched says they're solitary except for the breeding season and territorial, but it doesn't seem like this colony of moles got that memo.

Was a post a while back about that. The ones with the high populations were a different kind of mole. They had hair on their tails where the others did not. About the only way to tell the difference.

I have had a couple job the same. Get ready to pull traps and another mole pop's up. I have a real problem with one yard, they keep digging under the trap. Set Steve's trap both ways, one OOS. Next it will be a no-mole. Coming out of the woods into the lawn.

We average 3-5 moles here an acre...you may be close enough to pennsylvania to have the hairy tailed moles which are communal and live in same tunnels often. Eastern moles sre not so communal which is what we have here

There also has to be enough food in the area to support the increased population. I'd look for clues in the soil to see if you have more organic matter in the soil, etc.

I have occasionally seen high numbers but nowhere near what you’re seeing. In my area, I usually expect 1-3 per acre but it’s been 3-5 this year so a high number ‘pocket’ for me is in the teens.

In my area we deal mostly in city lots not in acres so on average we might have a mole in the front/back yard or sometimes both on average of about twice a year per client EXCEPT during breeding season (April thru early may)then the numbers really tend to jump up.
