Squirrel Numbers Up. Seasonal?

Squirrel Numbers Up. Seasonal? - 08/28/19 08:43 PM

Lately, I've been catching quite a few squirrels. All summer long, at most, one a week. In the last two days, I've caught 5.

Is this a normal trend for the fall?

Found an article online about male squirrels moving out of the territory, while the females tend to hang back (to help avoid inbreeding, was their guess). Didn't check the sex of all, (do you ever get used to doing the gonad check?), but at least 3 were female...

Squirrels will move due to changing availability of food. They start moving into areas with pecan trees here now. That is when I see a jump in their numbers in my hood.

That’s interesting. I generally only get squirrel calls in the fall/early winter and a few again in late spring/early summer (birthing season). A few here and there at other times, but not many. My last one they were chewing out screens and entering the living space (lots of houses up here don’t have AC) - four different windows.

Weather is starting to cool here, not a lot, but the grass is starting to green up again, so I'm sure the animals are noticing it.

Since the 5 caught, haven't seen anymore, so not an exodus of any sort yet. First year trapping them so I'll be able to see how numbers vary. I'm in the city, so it's hard to tell exactly where they are getting all their food. Can't see what's going on in the backyards--I do know that some neighbors are feeding them peanuts (not sure which--cat down the street is hiding them under the owners bed along with the usual mice, rats and birds).

So the business model is: wife sells bird feeders and peanuts, and husband does the ADC work? grin

Yezzir!! Homeowners feeding wildlife is how many of their problems start as I'm sure you are already aware of this. The best is when they say they have a "couple" of feeders out and when you get there that "couple" is more like a 1/2 dozen with feed littered all over the lawn and they are curious as to why they have squirrels in their cabinets or garage etc where they keep the feed. Or the customer that takes down the feeders while you're trapping but will feed them at night by tossing feed by hand into the yard. Even better when you get them on camera and they say they didn't do it.
