OOS traps

OOS traps - 02/01/21 11:51 PM

Just a bit of checking told me the patent for OOS traps expired some time ago. Some one good with metal casting or machining might be able to make a few bucks.

I would be a buyer if they could match the older style of strength that victor had...10 dozen a year buyer

Just imagine a Steve Albano type stainless steel version of the OOS! Wishful thinking!

How do the talpex traps compare? I’ve heard they have a weaker spring. Would they just need a spring upgrade??

Re: OOS traps - 02/02/21 11:30 PM

As far as spring strength, Talpex mole traps can't compare to that of the original OOS. This trap can be set without a setting tool which tells you outright it has a weaker spring. The legs/jaws are also shorter and you'll get some misses. BUT, this trap has a place in my Mole tool box. I primarily use this trap along foundations and fences where I can't/won't use the OOS. It works good also in open, sandy soils with no grass or weed roots. My primary trap is the OOS otherwise. I use Steve Albano's trap (upside down) anytime moles are foraging deeper than the surface/foraging runs.

The official Talpex trap is made in the Netherlands and as of a year ago or so was only available thru a couple of British sources. There are quite a few Chinese made copycats available on eBay. Don't know how they would fare.

Aggie 73: I see all your OOS have the up-grades on them, are they worth the added cost?

IMHO absolutely! Never have to worry about rust on the SS trip rod and trip plate (or having to build a mud bridge under it). I buy the kits and put them on myself.

Re: OOS traps - 02/06/21 02:03 PM

I agree with Aggie. I put the kits on myself. I don’t use the provided rivets, but instead I use 4-40 stainless socket head cap screws and stainless nuts. This way I can take the trigger plate off when it comes time to repaint or powdercoat. One thing to make sure of is that where the new trigger plate clamps on the frame that there are no burrs from the casting process. I used a pencil grinder and sanded the burrs. Otherwise your trigger plate won’t swing freely.

Yeah, like around 1920 or so?

No 2018.

I would agree that the newer OOS can't compare to the older models as far as spring strength.
We still catch a few with them, though

Really? The out of sight has been around since around 1900 or so. Unless they changed the design slightly and got a new patent, but the original patent should have expired about a century ago.

Why, yea.
Why aren't you ?

Look, how many times you ever driven down the road and see a mole mound pushin' up through the snow ?
If you live in the East or Midwest, north of the Mason-Dixon, the answer is likely : Often !
Real common around here and those moles are workin' overtime beneath the surface, making a yard look horrible.
Often times, it's one or two moles, pushin' up a dozen or more mounds.
Looks worst than it is, but that's what gets a 'customer' ( or potential customer) fired up !
Now if that moles is movin', (and it is) it can be caught.
But the ground and the trap will freeze, you say.
Haven't you ever heard of 'salt' ?
How many of have either used salted dirt or know of a 'canine' trapped who uses salt mixed into the dirt to keep it from freezing ?
It isn't 'rocket science' but you can best bet one thing. . . if you're not marketing your mole service all year long, there will soon be someone that will !
And I can teach them, as in my better years, I trapped moles, most years, all year long !

Interesting, thanks for posting. Hoping for an early spring.

I tell my customers that if they can see activity, then they can be trapped.

These were caught with the new aluminum OOSs that they changed to this summer?

Buds Trap Company LLC

Jordan is a great guy to deal with. He will get you hooked up. $10 each. Just ordered 50 kits tonight. They are on all my OOS traps. Here’s a pic from today.

Re: OOS traps - 04/08/21 12:09 PM

You’re welcome dusty! When you remove the stock trigger pan, be sure to debur the area underneath it. A lot of times there is extra material, especially in the radiused corners, that needs to be filed away ( from the casting process) Otherwise when you rivet the new trigger pan on there it can rub and not spin freely.

Re: OOS traps - 04/09/21 02:06 PM

Maybe a dumb question but what is the benefits of the after market pan kit on the oos traps.
Posted By: Tony H

Re: OOS traps - 04/09/21 10:31 PM

They are made of stainless and won’t rust. Also, the pan sits a little lower and is a bit wider so it takes less force to trip the trap. Also if the trap settles a bit it is less likely to trip with the wider pan.
