Rabbit under the porch/deck

Rabbit under the porch/deck - 03/23/21 02:58 AM

Looking for ways to get the rabbit under son's targe back deck. He's set a couple of traps out away from the house at some holes in the property fence hoping to catch it on its way back and forth to the field, but no luck so far.

Deck is 12' x 20' but only about 12 inches above ground level.

Don't have any live traps, was thinking about about a cubby with a long setback ( they have a 4 year old, don't wait to trap the inquisitive ) at the end of the deck.

Does anyone have suggestions for an effective rabbit bait. His wife wants the rabbit gone! Son doesn't want to use anything attractive to the coon population.

Exclusion work around the deck. Leave a small hole for the trap. Plug hole when finished.

what Eatenbylimestone said, can you pieces of scape wood etc make temporary fence around deck then put your trap. I did do a rabbit job a couple weeks ago caught 2 in baited set traps with hay in the back, I sprinkled some apple juice in cage too not sure if it helped or not the juice. Then another rabbit in a positive set cage going under fence gate with double door cage.

Decks will present an on going problem with various wildlife if the deck is new, they will all come in time. Best to invest in a barrier installation now if someone is concerned about things going under or living under the deck. A forever situation. I love folks with decks and sheds.

Better invest in some cage traps as this will never end. Good advice already given to give you a short term fix.

I can't understand why people get so worked up over a rabbit under a porch and / or deck, if it's only crime is just going in and / or under.
Burrows have always been a part of a rabbit's behavior. The fore mentioned offers that .
This mentality goes along with people who try to eradicate wildlife just because it 'walked in their yard', as if this world belonged to them and not something we all share,
The many years I did control work, much of it could have been avoided if people would just let wildlife live their lives and learn to enjoy and appreciate them, as opposed to removing it from a place it belongs as much as themselves.
Many of the animals I caught, removed and sometimes destroyed didn't need to be.

Thanks for the replies. LT GREY, I agree with you, if it was just my son's place, he wouldn't care. But we all know, 'when mama isn't happy no one is happy!' So city mama says rabbit has to go. I would be feeding that rabbit all summer and have a great rabbit stew this fall, personally ... but then I'm like that. Lol

The rabbit job I did was the first one I've done..and maybe my only one time will tell. But hey if she wanted to pay me a premium to exclude her fence and trap a few in her yard since she didn't like the rabbit dropping she found once the snow melted than so be it. She didn't even notice the chewing they had done on her bushes until I pointed it out to her.

X2 that's what I did works very well when there is snow, so you can pack up the edges. I just put a 110 over the pre-existing hole and got him a week later. Too me a 110 seemed a little small for the big cotton tails we have.

Snow, what's that? Lol. We haven't had more than 4" on the ground at any one time all winter here. Thinking about it, probably why the rabbit is under the deck. Not enough snow to exclude him or her from belly crawling under the deck.

We had about two feet or so a little below average this year.

I'd say try carrots, maybe a little lettuce too.

Rabbits use obvious runs-snare it.

I've thought about that, but I don't think our cable laws allow rabbit snaring.

Interesting what LT said. LT hit on something very important. When people call about any wildlife trapping the first thing I ask is, "what are they damaging." I like to feel good about what I do, catching and removing animals that are actually causing a problem, providing a reason to remove them, not to just catch and remove something to make a buck. I have talked many people into saving their money, while talking myself out of a job I probably could have done, but for no good reason. Even with woodchucks, I ask if they are eating flowers, vegetables or undermining foundations or driveways. If not, no reason to trap them. So many want to live in a sterile environment, nothing in their yards. With that said, anyone with bushes in their yard knows what rabbits do to bushes in winter. They destroy them. We have had good luck with open live traps and bait, using the simple 6x8 and 7x7 swing panel cage traps. I carry light weight blocking material and stakes to encircle decks and porches in minutes while leaving an opening for a double door cage for chucks and skunks especially, which can be applied to rabbits too.

Ground Hogs under a deck pose a problem, because they will dig down to the footing of the foundation. Rabbits burrow 10", I'd leave them unless you're hungry.

With many landowners, it seems they get aggrevated not so much with rabbits being under the porch as much as they dislike those rabbits roaming the yard eating their flowers.
