More water

More water - 06/25/21 04:54 PM

We are getting more rain than I can remember since I started trapping moles. What effect will all this rain have on trapping moles?
I know rain bring the worm up to the top of the ground and the mole will follow. But it is going to rain on and off for the next 4 days.
I have a lot of traps in the ground that have to be checked.

If an area floods, dig a few holes in the tunnels to let the water flood the tunnels.

If the ground gets saturated enough and water begins flowing thru the tunnels there won't much mole activity except for star nosed moles. Eastern and Hairy tail moles will retreat to more drained and dryer soil conditions until the water perks away. Many will go to higher ground, root areas of trees / shrubs and closer to homes and landscape areas.

Yeah, star nose seem to have gils. The eastern and hairy tail are upland habitat. Flooding should move them into a smaller area.

We've been in a drought this year but the weather has turned rainy the past couple weeks. Wow did the moles ever come out of the woodwork this month. I've trapped 7 in 1 yard this week. I got 19 in that yard last year. Mole trapping is an annual battle, at least in suitable habitat in which the yard is surrounded by mostly forest.
