Skunk bait - how old is too old?

Skunk bait - how old is too old? - 08/03/22 07:36 PM

With the heat we are having in the south, bait (cat food, chicken bones, etc) tends to "ripen" quickly. Are skunks as disgusted by this old stuff as I am?

Thanks, Wally

That is one of the problems at times using household materials in the warmer months.Wet cat food tends to spoil in a day or less with fly eggs developing within 24 hrs. Colder temps it will last much longer.

We have an farm cat that won't eat day old wet cat food left in its dish. I use to figure it shouldn't matter to an outdoor cat.

I smelled ithe left over wet cat food one day in the summer to see what it smelled like. It had soured already even sitting in the shade. I then noticed fly eggs already clustered on the food in places. Flies won't lay eggs just any where. Only where the hatched larvae can thrive and eat when they hatch.

Conditions have to be right with smell and composition of the material to trigger the egg laying process. Some animals have the sense of acceptance or rejection of a food material. Believe it.

Eating acceptance or rolling interest.

Cheesies and pork rinds do not mind the heat.

It’s not quite as hot up here, but we do get hot stretches. I’ve never had Bob’s Peaches and Cream on a marshmallow get too old for a skunk. I use that bait for 95% of my baited skunk catches. Cheetos as a trailer.

Properly prepared products will hold the course as far as spoilage and odor. Store products not so much if it has to sit for days before connecting.

I have had cages baited with Peaches & Cream from a year ago that were in use. They were then picked up from a job and placed on our large cage trap shelves for storage. They had plenty of odor and still supple in texture to reset without rebaiting if needed.. That is when you know a product is well built. I find those situations interesting and rewarding.

Skunks are not picky what they eat.

Little Debbie stuffed oatmeal cookie sandwiches are $2/dozen. Try them. 1 will catch tge skunk, you'll eat tge rest. Nobody's ever admitted they do that with cat food.

I have tried them and they do work pretty good. I have also "sampled" them in an effort to better understand what my target animal may think of them. Its all about the science.

There can be times you need to match the hatch if they are keying in on a food source.
But generally they are much like a coon and will eat most anything.
