Setting beaver legholds on rocky shoreline

I have a job at the local lake and the customer's shoreline has rip rap out about 3 feet in the water. I've removed rocks and tried to get down where I can bed the trap. I'm not having much luck. Any suggestions?

Are you wanting to use footholds or coni's. Here's a tip i got from the beav( t-man member). Use a sandbag or cut off pants legs filled with sand. Footholds bed well and coni's clamp onto the bag or pants. Sounds goofy, but by gosh it works. Just have to adjust the amount of sand accordingly.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you got rip rap up the bank and down into the water, right.

Yeah, I can see how setting in that would be a mess no matter what trap you use.

Cages have worked for me in areas that standard won't.

But you could try long chaining footholds and importing dirt to create a trap bed. Long chaining works very well as long as you don't have entanglement on the back and they can get to the water.

Cut a few good sized chunks of sod,and find a suitable spot to make your set.Place the sod upside down on the rocks to bed trap and make your set.

thanks for the replies. All seem like logical methods to try. Worse yet, it is quite a walk and very steep.

If you are able to drive a 5/8” steel rebar to put the magnebed on, it will work quickly and efficiently in rip rap. Once of the two times that I have dealt with riprap I was able to pull up a few rocks and get a stake down for the magnebed. If you can not drive a stake, then the magnebed will require a custom “base rock”. What I did was remove the stake-socket base and attach the magnetic top to the edge of a brick with tapcons. I then “packed” riprap around the brick to securely wedge the brick in place. This worked, but as with other methods like the sod or bag/pantleg filled with sand, it requires some extra preparation and effort and care when setting. Which goes with the territory, thats why they called you, you are the pro with all the tricks who is working for a living…. Im right there with you. Faster is better, but I do what it takes.

Next time I encounter riprap I have a new plan. I am going to weld up a three legged support of heavy 5/8” rerod like an almost flat tripod. My idea is to remove a few of the rocks in a triangle, put the three legged base down and get it set where it needs to be, then put rocks back on top of the legs to secure them. I expect it will be easier and all around better than the edgewise brick method, and the legs should only need to be around 14 inches long to get it nice and solid.

If you dont have other uses for the magnebed like very soft mud or steep banks very often, your best bet for a one-time deal will probably be the sod or bag/pantleg filled with sand.

I used the sandbag method and scored a 45 pounder that evening. Thanks for the advice. Also, as the lake is rising, I'll add another sandbag or two to bring the trap up to the proper height.

Rip rap surely is hateful stuff, a "mess." Wish it was illegal. Dangerous where they put it down long embankments and you have to pick your way down to the water and then walk on it in the water. Have had some close calls on steep banks. Like Warrior mentioned, cages could work in a situation like that if you moved some of the rock to make a more level landing area and get the right depth. Glad to hear you were successful. When I see those man made situations with rock I sometimes feel like calling and saying, "sorry, I couldn't find your house."

I just set a cage on the bank with the lure of your choice, for the time of year and some guiding.
