What do you do to control stomach inflamation?

What do you do to control stomach inflamation? - 03/22/10 09:54 AM

I've tried marshmallow root and licorice with no effect. (herbal pills.)

Calcium seems to help, as does fiber.

I recently tried Sweedish Bitters, and that seems to help, but it tastes pretty nasty! crazy (Camphor is one of the ingredients.)

I think the main stomach calmer in that one is Saffron.

However, Saffron is pretty expensive. Is there an affordable remedy that you have tried that works for stomach ailments?

Ginger calms the stomach, I use boil it in water and make a tea. Tastes like crap but settles my stomach.

The problem with tums and Rolaids I have found is it exposes you to illness. One should only take antacids when necessary. Your stomach PH helps protect you from virus' and bacteria you ingest.
(This is what a doctor told me.) Too many antacids will likely get me sick by raising my PH.

I have such frequent stomach problems that I need to take something every day for weeks on end, then I have a time period where the stomach is less sensitive, but randomly that comes to an end and it's back to being inflamed and easily upset.

It's not so much an acid problem that I can't get a hold of. After eating a meal sometimes the upper bowels just under the stomach start to swell up painfully and sometimes it feels like they twist. I used to think it was from eating specific foods but it really is truly random. The burning is from inflammation rather than acid.

I'm hoping to discover some sort of herbal or home remedy I've never heard of that might help. I don't have anything against prescription drugs but I just can't afford them.

You may think I'm crazy but...At the first sign of Stomach virus, or disruption of any sort, I break out the Hot peppers. Preferably a hot salsa with some tortilla chips. It seems to Kill what ever is causing the disturbance. It really does work for me.

Tsarevna. Have you tried peppermint tea ? When I was a kid my mom would give me a cup of hot water with a few drops of peppermint extract in it. Worked well back then.

That's a good idea. I should try that.

Metro Mint (minted water) has helped me in the past, I bet the tea would do well too. Sure would be cheaper than buying tons of the bottled water.

I got checked out for Chron's, celiac and colitis. Nada.
Could possibly be endometriosis on the bowel but we'll see when I go under the knife! eek

For now docs pretty much say I have the worst possible case of IBS a person can get. frown I think I got IBS because I had a giant gallstone for years and they didn't take care of it until it was the size of an olive.

So far I've tried ginger hard candy the other day when I had nausea and that really helped! The peppermint helps too.

I get acid reflux and have used all kinds of things to keep from burping what ever I ate or drank hours before (trust me- its always better the first time!).
For minor problems sprite seems to work.

I have found something that works pretty well!
It's not always practical to brew up mint tea, so I picked some of this up in the store the other day:

It is pretty soothing! I thought if I ate food with it, it would make my food taste bad like it does after you brush your teeth. Actually it didn't effect the taste much at all.

The website tells you where you can get it. smile

When my stomach starts giving me problems I eat Hot Jalepeno salsa on some tortilla chips. It burns a little going down but it straightens my stomach right out. Seriously!

I realize that this is an old post now but I thought I would put this out there just in case you have yet to find a solution. I have the same symptoms as you describe and have had them for years. The only thing I have found that provides consistent relief is an over the counter tablet called "Beano". It's marketed as a supplement designed to prevent gas, but it works wonders for those of us who suffer from severe IBS. How and why it works, I have no idea, but I do know that it is an all natural product and that is important to me. It comes in two forms, liquid or tablets. I prefer the tablets, but I see no reason why one should work any better than the other. Good luck and I hope you find some relief.

Just saw this Gerty.. but the Mint tea is a great thing for the stomach area, so is Ginger tincture. The Ginger is more for nausea and the mint more for upset stomach....
Aloevera juice is great for reestablishing the colon area after major attacks where the pH and bacteria balance in the colon are out of whack.

Had a doctor tell me I had IBS he was way wrong went in and had upper GI found a hiatal hernia, had a scope done and said not to bad for my age 42 also had a sensor stuck in me to check PH of stoamch acids refluxing and again PH severaity not too bad. could have had 2o,ooo surgery or take pills. I am on previcid and that has made a world of differance, so unless they do a GI one might want to get it done to be sure. The quack who told me I had IBS, also said I he couldn;t feel a hiatal hernia, you can't feel one you need a upper GI with the white chalky liquid, that guy will never get me back in there again!!!!!

When I was younger I suffered from gastritis which I think covers a lot of general digestive issues. A "shot" of peppermint schnapps before bed or watching t.v. seemed to help as much as any antacid.

Aloe Vera Jell or juice works well for stomach ulcers/Crohn's disease. Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother is excellent for indigestion etc. Along with it builds up your immunity. Mrs. Braggs is the best brand. If it is too sour tasting you can sweeten it up with honey, aiding in more healing properties.

I know this is an old topic but I thought I would chime in. If your talking about heartburn, acid reflux, I have been able to go medicine free by eating a fruit yogurt cup each day for lunch or breakfast. It is not an instant remedy, usually takes two to three days to kick in but am also able to go two to three days without before the heartburn starts back up. The store brands don't seem to work as well, Activia and Yoplait work best for me.

Re: What do you do to control stomach inflamation? - 04/17/12 01:43 PM

Tsarevna...let me know what you find out. I have been experiencing something very similar for over a year. I had all the upper and lower GI endoscopy done, as well as an MRI of the upper abdomen. My gallbladder has been gone since 1999. They are finding nothing and treated me for H-pylori and acid reflux. (The antibiodics made my stomach hurt as much if not more.)

I recently went back to a natural path doc that I had seen a few years ago. Based on the PH tests done with saliva, I do not have acid reflux. So what we are doing now is a regimen of supplements (expensive) for balancing stomach and GI PH and flora. I continue to go gluten free in my diet, drink aloe juice everyday, eat yogurt and take ACV (apple cider vinegar). I've only been doing the supplement regimen less than a week and unfortunately still have some problems, mostly with the awful fullness feeling after eating and a pressure type feeling in my upper stomach which comes and goes. I am hoping that symptoms will improve...my logic being that it didn't take a few days to get out of whack, so it should take more than a few days to get things back to normal. My gluten free eating has been since last summer and my lower GI has improved immensely...IBS is NO fun.

I have also read that ginger and garlic are good for stomach issues as well as a certain type of licorice.

Take care....

Go gluten free for ten days. Corn and wheat products, plus dairy products, give me colon problems. When I avoid them, I get well. Wine is better than beer or booze since it is grain free.
