The Great Keto Thread - 07/17/19 01:24 AM

Is anyone else doing this lifestyle and way of eating (WOE)?

I’ve been on and off for the past 14 months or so. At first it was the stress of trying to find different and easy recipes but as time crept by I found out just how easy most of the stuff was.

What really sold me on Keto in the first place was a documentary on Netflix called The Magic Pill. There were so many points in there that really made sense and hit home with me.

Anyone else care to discuss or trade recipes? Unfortunately my recipes are all from web pages and I doubt that we’d be permitted to post the links to the recipes, although one can never be sure.

Keto is a high fat, moderate protein, and low carb way of eating. It's based on the facts that sugar and carbs, which turn to sugar, are what causes weight gain and even feeds cancer.

Your body will burn it's easiest form of fuel for energy. Sugar is the easiest form of energy for the body to burn. So when it burns what energy it needs it stores everything else. What you do by eating keto is to remove that easy form of energy, sugar/carbs/etc..., which then makes your body search for the second easiest form of energy to burn, which is fat. So you feed your body healthy fats, olive oil/butter/avocados/etc..., and it will eventually become fat adapted, meaning that it's adapted to burning fat now for fuel instead of sugar/carbs, and it will also send you into what's called ketosis. It lowers your insulin, etc...

I eat twice a day within an 8 hour window and fast the other 16 hours (8 of which are sleeping), am never hungry in between meals, and am feeling amazing. The 16 hours that I fast is called intermittent fasting. It's actually unintentional. You get to a point where you just aren't hungry.

One thing that I read that really hit home to me was, "Is your stomach telling your head that you're hungry, or is your head telling your stomach that you're hungry?"

Now when I have cravings I actually analyze that and find out that it's mostly my head telling my stomach that I'm hungry which means that I'm really not hungry.

If you're interested, sign up for the free 30 day trial of Netflix and watch the documentary The Magic Pill. It does a better job of explaining it that I can.

I have changed my lifestyle to keto on June 3 this year. Had my regular labs and Dr visit. My A1c was 8.5 which translates roughly to an average blood glucose level of 225. I decided it was time to change. I was also told that I was soon to be in need of a new knee. That motivated me!
I have been eating once or twice a day and have honestly forgot what it felt like to be hungry. Been checking glucose several times a day and since I started my 14 day averages have been in the high 90s range. I have lost just over 40 pounds so far and can really tell the difference on my knee.
I highly recommend reading or listening to the book, "The Obesity Code"
As far as recipes, I really have none, I eat lots of good bacon, rib eyes, eggs, and shrimp scampi. Without the junk food and pizzas I can buy good quality food and still spend far less each day.

60 pounds lighter, and now 2 weeks tobacco free. Walking at least 4 miles a day. This is a guy that had to rest if walking a quarter mile last year!

4 miles, wow. Good for you.
You been doing a daily walk to check out that big bridge project in Baudette?

Friar, that's amazing news!!! I haven't been checking this thread because it never seemed to have any activity.

Congrats to you Brother! I need to get back on the keto train myself. Fell off a few months ago and never got back on.

I can't figure out why this Health forum gets such little activity.

Because when we think that we’re fine we don’t want to even think about what might be wrong

We seem to be sure that we are in great shape until we get proved wrong.
I was sure that it was just aging that made me so poor at getting around until I lost the weight and realized that I could now get around better now than ten years ago!

Complacency is always the enemy. That’s one of the biggest subjects that I would tell myself in a letter 20 years ago.
