Lure test

I am going to try out a couple of test lures for coyotes and fox the next couple weeks and see how they do.

#1- ground slightly age mice with mink gland, glycerine and a couple drops of skunk

#2 - equal parts skunk oil, trout oil and rotted beaver oil sacs

#3 - equal parts skunk oil, trout oil and rotted muskrat glands

It will be interesting to see how it goes, my beagle likes #3 the best.

I like the sound of #1.

I'd like to try playing with rotten muskrat glands but haven't gotten my hands on any yet. Let us know the results. When you mix the trout oil with the skunk oil does it keep it from solidifying at cooler temps? I used skunk oil in a couple of formulas this summer and both of them showed good reactions from the yotes in preseason testing.

Skunk oil by itself doesn't attract much for me. Mixing it with fish oil and sac oil would be a good use. I use it as a solvent for civet paste. Mink gland changes over time. I think its best used right away, mixed up in small amounts, or rotted down till stable for use in a batch intended to last a few years.

Yes sir, if you want some rotted down rat musk buy some fresh froze glands. Rot some down yourself. Just put some in a vented jar and let it sit a couple years in your shed.

Yes, that's basically what I did, I bought a pint and rotted half and saved the other half. I rotted mine in a glass jar in the sun and vented every couple of day.

I would go with#3 i've never tested any thing that would come near to the rubbing, rollingresponse by all canines and bobcats than tainted muskrrat glands. All of my years in the lure business i saved fresh muskrat glands for formulation in muskrat and mink lures and tainted muskrat glands into fox, coyote and bobcat lures

Well I thought I would follow up to this post. All 3 worked fairly well (coyotes were caught on all 3), none of them were outstanding and neither really stood out among the others. I am planning on tweaking them slightly. I used them mostly on M-44 type applications (dowel with burlap or felt wrapped) and such I will be adding a little honey to all of them. The ratio on #3 may need to be changed a bit with a little more rat musk or possibly and added kicker.

You can't tweak, what you don't know... So let them blend.
Think Beaver tail oil. ED

Please expand, I am not real sure what you are saying. IMO, there are better ingredients to add than bto.
