Oil Based for lures

Would anybody light to enlighten me on the proper use of oils as a base for lures? Like skunk oil and musk oil? Ive messed around with them a little but it seems nothing much mixes with them. Do i need do add another ingredient to make the oils soluble in order to mix?

im lost explain further but a oil based and a water based material will not bond without added materials you will have to add a bonding adgent

Thats basically what I'm asking. Is there a specific bonding agent that can be used when using oil as a base(such as skunk oil or trout oil) that will keep ingredients and oil separation from happening.

What you are looking for is an emulsifier, google it.
What we have in this 1oz bottle is 1tsp 100 proof vodka, 1tsp sweet salmon oil(ginger, anis) & 1tsp sweetened condensed milk. I shook it up last summer & still holding up amazingly. Still smells like the sweet salmon oil too.
Oil can be hard to work with, but small batches = small mistakes so keep it simple when trying new stuff.

not sure what musk oil is but skunk oil isn't a good base. it doesn't really attract much or have much smell by itself.

So what are the uses for skunk oil in lure making?

a base oil that readily excepts other smells by its self it has very little smell I use it as a bonding agent along with a filler you can use it to stretch out other oils as well 1 oz of pure quill to 16 ozs of good clean skunk oil! Will blow your socks off! in a pinch makes a decent ldc. For a twist add 1/4 oz sac oil

I wanted to share this about skunk oil in it's use as numbers of people around here used it as a medicinal. My Grandfather who I post this for in honor of him, was a trapper and fur buyer, among numbers of other trade to just survive. He used to render skunk fat into oil, by cutting strips of it and hanging it on the south side of his barn in the winter, saying this made the best oil.
He always told me two stories about the miracle of skunk oil. One night during a raging blizzard, someone was banging on his door. He found a man from west central Minnesota on his doorstep pleading for a jar of skunk oil, as his child was sick and he came 20 miles in the storm to obtain it. My Grandfather tried to get him to stay a bit, but he said he had to get back home as the child was really sick.
In our family, my Grandfather's youngest son who was a baby, and Gram was crying as the child was turning blue. It was a blizzard again and no one was getting to a hospital, so he told me that all he could do was cover the baby head to toe with skunk oil, wrap him up and wait for morning. He said the next morning my uncle was playing and laughing, but had passed a green colored offal.
I know the old time stories always talked of bear and coon grease, but skunk is all the settlers had. I had it rubbed on me as did my siblings. I was talking to an old well driller and he told me the same stories, but added, "We took a spoonful inside too".
People think nothing of reaching for petroleum grease as a cure, but most would make snide remarks about skunk oil for the same use.

I'm looking to turn some popular oil into an apple/popular lure I see the base Petro from MTP but I'm left to wonder if it would work in the Lanolin sheep grease as well... I'm after beavers, I know they don't like dead animals in there damns, can someone save me time how do beaver react to Lanolin alone, and how good will oil mix into it...

The you for posting your story. It's too bad most of that information is lost. Years ago the older people around here would send their kids to get this or that root or leaf and make a tea or just eat it and it worked.

There are many medicinal plants, roots and animal byproducts that were and are very effective for treating a host of ailments. Where do you think many of our modern medicines are derived from. Many are refined, modified and altered but still many are nature based ingredients.

It is an all but lost art of knowing what plants and roots work for various health problems.

I have a story about skunk oil too. My great grandmother rendered it too. My papaw and his two buddies came in one night late, a little or a lot disoriented, and ate what mom had cooked. She asked the next day who ate the skink. They used to use it like starflake said around here around the early 1900's.

Just so people don't get confused. An emulsifier and a thickening agent are two different things and don't work the same way.
